Scholarship Opportunities: ARLIS/NA Conference Attendance and Travel Awards

The Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) Travel Awards Subcommittee is now accepting applications for the ARLIS/NA Conference Attendance and Travel Awards to support attendance at the ARLIS/NA 50th annual conference in Chicago, IL on April 5-9, 2022. Applications are due by January 7, 2022 through this form.

Awards Open to Current ARLIS Members

Conference Attendance Award (1 award/$1000)

Eligibility: Individual member who serves as a committee member, group moderator, and/or chapter officer. Purpose: To encourage participation in ARLIS/NA by assisting conference attendance by committee members, chapter officers, and moderators, of divisions, sections, and round tables.

The recipient will write a brief post-conference report evaluating their conference experience.

Student Conference Attendance Award (1 award/$1000)

Eligibility: Student members who are active participants in ARLIS/NA and are currently enrolled in an accredited graduate program in Library Studies and/or Information Studies or have recently graduated (within 12 mos. of graduation). Purpose: To encourage participation in ARLIS/NA by assisting students considering a career in art librarianship or visual resources to attend the annual ARLIS/NA conference.

The recipient will write a brief post-conference report evaluating their conference experience.

Awards Open to All Eligible Applicants

Student Diversity Award for Conference Attendance (1 award/$1000)

Eligibility: Students from a traditionally under-represented group who are currently enrolled in an accredited graduate program in Library Studies and/or Information Studies or have recently graduated (within 12 mos. of graduation). To be considered for the award, applicants must meet the following criteria:

· Be enrolled as a graduate student in Library Studies or Information Studies or recently graduated (within 12 mos. of graduation)

· Be one of the following:

U.S. resident and a member of a racial/ethnic group as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau: African American/Black; Latino/Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, or American Indian/Alaska Native or
Canadian resident and of aboriginal identity, as defined in the Canadian Employment Equity Act (“aboriginal peoples” means persons who are Indians, Inuit, or Métis) or
Canadian resident and a member of a visible minority, as defined by the Canadian Employment Equity Act (members of “visible minorities” means persons, other than aboriginal peoples, who are non-Caucasian in race or non-white in colour)

· Be interested in career in art librarianship/visual resources

A mentor from the ARLIS/NA Diversity Committee, who will facilitate the recipient’s attendance at the Conference, will be assigned to the recipient of the award prior to the Conference. The recipient will write a brief post-conference report evaluating their conference experience.

Purpose: To encourage multicultural students considering a career in art librarianship or visual resources to participate in the activities of ARLIS/NA.

Howard Karno Award (1 award/$1000)

Eligibility: Art librarians residing in Latin America or Art Librarians residing in North America working with significant Latin American art/architecture research collections or researching subjects or themes related to Latin American art/architecture. Purpose: To encourage professional development of art librarians who work to advance the study of Latin American art through interaction with ARLIS/NA colleagues and conference participation.

The recipient will write a brief post-conference report evaluating their conference experience.

Judith A. Hoffberg Student Award for Conference Attendance (1 award/$1000)

Sponsored by the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) the Judith A. Hoffberg Student Award for Conference Attendance is given annually in honor of the founding of ARLIS/NA and its first president. The Art Libraries Society of North America was founded in 1972 by a group of art librarians attending the American Library Association annual conference in Chicago at the initiative of Judith Hoffberg. Eligibility: Students who are currently enrolled in an accredited graduate program in Library Studies and/or Information Studies or have recently graduated (within 12 mos. of graduation). Purpose: To encourage students considering a career in art librarianship or visual resources to participate in the activities of ARLIS/NA.

The recipient will write a brief post-conference report evaluating their conference experience.

Deliberations are expected to be complete by January 28, 2022.

Gerd Muehsam Award

The Gerd Muehsam Award is given annually to recognize excellence in a graduate student paper or project on a topic relevant to art librarianship. Any student enrolled in an accredited graduate library program, or in a graduate program in art history or a related discipline, is encouraged to submit a paper or online project created in conjunction with a course assignment during the previous eighteen months (since June 2020). One submission per person.

To apply, please submit the following:

Paper or online project about a topic relevant to art librarianship, written as a course assignment.
An abstract of 250 words and 10-25 pages typed, double-spaced, for a paper submission, or a 250-word summary for an online project.
A title page that includes the student’s name, the name of the institution, the course for which the submission was created, and the name of the faculty member assigning the paper/project.
Applicants must include their mailing address, email address, and telephone number with their applications.

The award includes:

$500.00 prize.
Conference registration and up to $300 travel reimbursement to attend the ARLIS/NA 50th Annual Conference in Chicago, IL April 5–9, 2022.
Opportunity to present the winning paper at the conference as part of the New Voices in the Profession panel.
One-year membership to ARLIS/NA.

Wolfgang M. Freitag Internship Award

The Wolfgang M. Freitag Internship Award aims to represent the multifaceted nature of the art library field by providing a paid internship opportunity to a student currently enrolled in, or having completed within the last 12 months, a graduate program in library and information science, art history, architectural history, architecture, studio art, or museum studies.

To apply, please submit the following:

A current résumé.
A current transcript in PDF format (unofficial transcript is acceptable).
The names of two professional or scholastic references with addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses.
An essay of up to 900 words addressing your skills, background, and expectations of the internship experience, including the type of institution you are interested in as well as potential project ideas. The essay should also address the following questions:
- What are your professional goals and how do your plans for the experience funded by the ARLIS/NA Wolfgang M. Freitag Internship Award fit into your career path? In particular, how do you imagine this internship experience to be different than previous internship or work experiences?
- This award funds a one-year membership in ARLIS/NA. How do you see yourself participating in ARLIS/NA, or another professional organization, in your future professional life?
- If granted the internship award, when do you plan to fulfill it?

The award includes:

$3,000 to support a 150-hour internship in an art library or visual resources collection.

2018 Lois Swan Jones Professional Development Award Announcement

The ARLIS/NA Texas-Mexico Chapter is pleased to announce the 2018 Lois Swan Jones Professional Development Award, which supports the participation of an ARLIS/NA Texas-Mexico chapter member at the ARLIS/NA 46^th annual conference to be held in New York City from February 25-March 1, 2018.

This year, the $750 award will be awarded to help defray the costs of attending the conference – students and professionals are both encouraged to apply! The award committee urges everyone with interest and need to apply, especially first-time conference attendees, but previous recipients are eligible as well.

The deadline for applications is Wednesday, November 22, 2017.

Eligibility:

Applicant must be a member in good standing of ARLIS/NA. This year’s award will also include one year of membership in the ARLIS Texas-Mexico chapter, required for eligibility.
Applicants who are fully funded to attend the conference through their institution of employment or education are not eligible.
Applicant may live outside of Texas or Mexico.
Applicant is eligible even if the member has previously received the award. The committee shall consider the merits of the individual application independent of past decisions.

Application Procedure:

Applicant should submit a letter of application and curriculum vitae to the award committee chair via email (Helen Lueders at hlueders@mfah.org). The letter must include a statement of qualification explaining eligibility and interest, the amount of expected institutional funding (if any) for conference attendance, and proposed conference program involvement.
Deadline for 2018 Award submissions is November 22, 2017. The award this year is $750.00

2017 Lois Swan Jones Professional Development Award Announcement

The ARLIS/NA Texas-Mexico Chapter is pleased to announce the 2017 Lois Swan Jones Professional Development Award. This $500 award encourages active involvement of a member of the Texas-Mexico Chapter in the ARLIS/NA 45th Annual Conference held in New Orleans, February 5-9, 2017.

The award honors the memory of Lois Swan Jones, Professor Emerita of art history at the University of North Texas, by underwriting participation of members of the Texas-Mexico Chapter at the ARLIS/NA annual meeting.

The award committee urges everyone with interest and need to apply, especially first-time conference attendees. To meet the primary requirement, applicants must lack full institutional funding. Previous winners are eligible. Applicant must be a member in good standing of both ARLIS/NA and ARLIS/Texas-Mexico.

2016 ARLIS/SE Professional Development Travel Award

Is one of your New Years Resolutions to be more involved in professional associations?

The Southeast Chapter Travel Award is an excellent opportunity to help fund your conference travel.

Our best candidate will receive a $500 (USD) award to attend the joint ARLIS/NA and VRA conference in Seattle, WA on March 8-12, 2016.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this award is to cultivate a talented, dedicated, and educated group of professionals for the ARLIS/NA organization as well as the ARLIS/NA-SE chapter.

Funds from this award may be used to pay for travel, lodging, registration and meals associated with professional development activities at the annual ARLIS/NA conference.

ELIGIBILITY

Any individual meeting these criteria may apply for the award; however first-time attendees are given preference.

Currently reside in the geographic area served by the ARLIS/NA-SE chapter (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, and the U.S. Virgin Islands).
Membership in ARLIS/NA-SE and ARLIS/NA at the time of application is not required,
although preference will be given to current ARLIS/NA-SE members.
Currently be either employed in the field of art librarianship and/or visual resources curatorship, or enrolled in an educational program leading to a graduate degree.
Current students, individuals beginning their professional career within the field of Art Information in the past five years, and paraprofessionals who are becoming active in ARLIS/NA or ARLIS/SE for the first time may be included.
All individuals meeting these criteria may apply for the award; however, first-time attendees are given preference.
Recipients of the award may not reapply in future years.

AWARD RECIPIENT DUTIES

The travel award recipient is expected to:

Participate in the ARLIS/NA Conference Networking program (if they have not previously done so).
Attend the ARLIS/NA-SE Chapter meeting at the annual ARLIS/NA conference.
Submit a written report on his or her conference activities within one month of the conference. The report should be submitted to the ARLIS/NA-SE webmaster to be posted to the ARLIS/NA-SE webpage.
Serve on the 2017 Professional Development Travel Award Committee and subsequently chair the committee in 2018.

Award applications will be accepted up until midnight on Friday, January 29th, 2016. The award winner will be contacted no later than Friday, February 5th, 2016.

The ARLIS/NA – Ohio Valley Travel Award Committee 2015 is pleased to announce that the Spring 2015 Travel Award has been granted to Stacy Brinkman, Art & Architecture Librarian at Miami University.

Stacy is the chair of the Diversity Planning Grant Task Force, which has worked over the past year to draft an IMLS Planning Grant proposal that will position ARLIS/NA to recruit underrepresented minorities into the art information profession. Stacy is also a member of the ARLIS/NA Membership Committee.

ARLIS/NA SoCal Chapter Travel Awards – Applications due Saturday

Hi all,

Just one last reminder that the ARLIS/NA SoCal Chapter is offering two travel awards for the 43rd Annual ARLIS/NA Conference taking place in Fort Worth, TX, March 19-23, 2015. Attending the conference is a great opportunity to network with other professionals in the art libraries and archives field as well as gain insight on growing trends and important issues. The last day to submit your application is this Saturday, January 31st.

The Southern California Chapter of ARLIS/NA is currently offering two travel awards to support and encourage involvement by helping defray the costs of attending the conference. We encourage all to apply!

To apply, please read the eligibility requirements, selection guidelines, and conditions of receiving the awards below and submit a letter of application. Letters of application are due by Saturday, January 31. Recipients will be notified by Saturday, February 14.

Letter of Application:
The letter of application should briefly outline your reasons for attending the conference as well as a short biographical statement listing your employment history, educational background, professional activities, and how much funding you may be receiving from your institution (if any). Please limit application letters to two pages and specify in your email for which award you are applying.

Selection will be weighted toward those applicants who best fulfill the following guidelines:
1. Are attending the ARLIS/NA annual conference for the first time, and/or
2. Are actively participating in the conference in such roles as speaker, moderator, recorder, workshop attendee, etc.

Conditions:
1. Award winner must commit to attending the SoCal Chapter meeting at the conference.
2. Award winner must submit a written conference report for publication in Canvas, the SoCal Chapter newsletter. This report should include an account of the recipient’s personal conference experiences and how the award contributed to professional development.

ARLIS/NA SoCal CHAPTER STUDENT TRAVEL AWARD
The student travel award supports and encourages student involvement with ARLIS/NA and the SoCal Chapter, $300 will be granted to the award recipient.

Eligibility:
1. Applicants must be members in good standing of both ARLIS/NA and the SoCal Chapter.
Chapter membership forms can be sent along with the award application and membership is free to students!

2. Only applicants who receive partial or no institutional funds towards conference attendance will be considered for the award. We strongly encourage those who do not receive full funding to apply.

3. Applicants must be enrolled in a Master’s program working towards a library degree.

ARLIS/NA SoCal CHAPTER JUDITH A. HOFFBERG TRAVEL AWARD
This award honors the Chapter’s founder Judith A. Hoffberg (1934-2009), $300 will be granted to the award recipient.

Eligibility:
1. Applicants must be members in good standing of both ARLIS/NA and the SoCal Chapter.

2. Only applicants who receive partial or no institutional funds towards conference attendance will be considered for the award. We strongly encourage those who do not receive full funding to apply.

3. Current board members are eligible for the award.

On behalf of the 2015 ARLIS/NA-SE Travel Award Committee, I am pleased to announce that Sara DeWaay is our 2015 ARLIS/NA-SE Professional Development Travel Award winner!

Sara is the Art & Architecture Librarian at the J. Murrey Atkins Library at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She will be presenting a poster on an in-progress project of redesigning a space in the Architecture Branch Library to have a multitude of uses for the library and campus as a whole! She also plans on including information about involving students in this process!

Sara is a member of ARLIS/NA and ARLIS/NA-SE, but a first time annual conference attendee. She’s excited to learn more about what’s happening in art librarianship and to make more connections with the chapter and the association.

On behalf of the Executive Board of the ARLIS/NA Northwest Chapter I would like to offer my congratulations to Nicole Lovenjak for being awarded the Northwest Chapter’s Travel Award to the 2015 ARLIS/NA Conference in Fort Worth.

Nicole, who is currently doing a practicum at the Paul D. Fleck Library & Archives, The Banff Centre, is very involved with ARLIS/NA and will be presenting a poster about The Banff Centre’s transition to an open stack artists’ book collection. She also looks forward to talking with others at the conference about the challenges and positive outcomes of her project, Artists’ Books Canada.
