Student Job Post: Archives Assistant & Researcher, Toronto Dance Theatre


This is a Canada Summer Jobs position, with the requisite eligibility, and the deadline for applications is May 20th.

Toronto Dance Theatre (TDT) is looking for a full-time, summer Archival Assistant and Researcher to provide research support in advance of TDT’s 50th Anniversary season in 2017-18. The majority of the work will take place at 80 Winchester Street in Cabbagetown, with some research required at the company’s archive, held at York University.

The Archival Assistant and Researcher will report to the Managing Director of TDT and will be responsible for:

* Digitizing and cataloguing photos, posters, programs and DVDs from TDT’s archive;
* Connecting with TDT alumnae (i.e. former company dancers) to collect stories that will become part of an online exhibit throughout the 50th anniversary season;
* Documenting all records to be sent to our archive, held at York University.


To be eligible for the position, the candidate must be under 30 years-old and returning to school this September, 2016.

The position is a perfect learning opportunity for a student enrolled in a Library and Information Studies, Arts Management, Museum or Media Studies, or Collection Management post-secondary program.


$15/hour + all statutory deductions

Public Art Collections Assistant, Burnaby Art Gallery, BC


Reporting to the Assistant Curator, the Public Art Collections Assistant will assist the Burnaby Art Gallery in its ongoing inventory of public art, focusing on the interpretation and maintenance of public art objects. These duties will include: collecting data on objects; conducting research; entering research information into the CSTextWorks database; performing site maintenance visits to local public artworks; and developing strategies for the interpretation of works (such as mapping, apps, booklets, etc). The candidate will perform other gallery duties as necessary including collections research and other exhibition-related tasks.
This is an auxiliary position, with an hourly wage of $22.72, plus 12% in lieu of benefits.
The schedule for this position is 30 hours per week.
The position runs from June 6, 2016 to September 2, 2016, with some flexibility.

Archives Assistant, Vancouver Art Gallery Association


The Vancouver Art Gallery is seeking a post-secondary student currently enrolled in a full-time archival studies program for a temporary summer position in the Gallery Archives. This is a unique opportunity to participate in an important cultural heritage archive project.The Gallery is in the process of arranging and describing its archival collections. Working with the Chief Librarian and learning about curatorial practice and exhibition record keeping, the student will arrange and create descriptions for exhibition records and make this documentation of the Gallery’s history of activity accessible online through the MemoryBC portal.

Curatorial Assistant, Grenfell Campus Art Gallery, Corner Brook, NL


Grenfell Campus Art Gallery is Western Newfoundland’s public art gallery, supporting the Visual Arts Program of Memorial University, local public schools and the community of Corner Brook and the region. The gallery is an interpretive educational gallery dedicated to the research, interpretation and exhibition of contemporary and historical art relevant to regional, national and international interests. We also maintain an active program of collection and conservation of art. The successful candidate will be responsible for updating the collections database; the ongoing digitization and documentation of the collection; exhibition strikes and installations; exhibition development; working with youth; and the daily operation of the gallery. The successful candidate will have training in the visual arts and literacy in database, word-processing and spreadsheet software, an interest in art and gallery operations, strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills, and experience working with youth. As usual, this year’s collection of YCW jobs’ salaries are on the underwhelming side, and the general restrictions apply: you must be a returning full-time student, or, in some cases, a recent graduate of a university degree. But they’re good experience for those without any, and can often be supplemented with other work for the remainder of the summer. Exhibit Technician Summer Student


To work with the Museum team to develop exhibits. This position will work with the Museum on the design and fabrication of exhibit elements. The Exhibit Technician will also assist the Museum team with other curatorial tasks, including collections management, exhibit planning and preventive conservation.

Community and Outreach Programmer Summer Student


To work with the Education and Community Coordinator in the planning and development of community and outreach programs to take to local events and festivals. This position will be responsible for travel throughout the region to deliver programming and will also assist with the delivery of onsite programs such as school groups and the museum’s summer camp program. As part of the programming department this position will work closely with the School and Camp Programmer and Public Programmer.

To work with the Assistant Curator/Collections Coordinator to develop a plan and begin re-housing objects within the museum’s collections storage areas. This position will also work closely with the Digitization Technician Summer Student to ensure that re-housed collections are catalogued and tracked in the collections database. The Collections Technician will assist with other curatorial tasks, including collections management and exhibit development.

To work with the Assistant Curator/Collections Coordinator to digitize the Museum’s photograph and archival collections. This position will be responsible for maintaining metadata standards for digitized materials and will assist in improving the data within the Museum’s PastPerfect database. This position will also work closely with the Collections Technician Summer Student to ensure that collections are catalogued and tracked in the collections database. The Digitization Technician will also assist with other curatorial tasks, including collections management and exhibit development.
