Job Posting: Research Resources Assistant, Whitney Museum of American Art, NYC


This full-time position serves as the central administrative support for the Research Resources department, which provides access to primary resources, published resources, and other research material relating to the Museum’s support of American art and artists through its history, collections, and programming.


  • The Assistant provides reference services for Museum staff and external researchers accessing the following units within this department: The Frances Mulhall Achilles Library, the Archives, Special Collections, and the Permanent Collection Documentation Office.
  • Assist with circulation and patron database maintenance in the Voyager integrated library system (ILS)
  • Schedule appointments and maintain the department calendar
  • Process Library acquisitions
  • Handle all departmental invoicing
  • Oversee periodical subscriptions and acquisition
  • Provide research and clerical assistance to department
  • Assist in overseeing the work of interns and volunteers under Archive and Library staff supervision
  • Work on additional projects relevant to the priorities of the Research Resources department


  • 2 years’ experience; MLIS degree (with art history or studio art background preferred)
  • Hands-on library and archival skills
  • Experience or familiarity with Voyager ILS, ArchiveSpace, and The
  • Museum System (TMS)
  • Research experience
  • Knowledge of art history and contemporary American art
  • Familiarity with library and archival preservation
  • Understanding of the function and processes of both libraries and archives, and related experience a plus
  • Good communication skills necessary

Job Posting: Part-time hourly Research Assistant, The Getty, LA

Job Summary:

  1. Supports curator by facilitating their research and/or assisting with their research projects, exhibitions or publications.

Major Job Responsibilities:

  • Conducts research in the Getty Research Institute Special Collections related to the Concrete Poetry exhibition and to acquisitions
  • Requests images for exhibitions, researches and obtains art and image permissions
  • Proofreads, edits, and translates label and caption copy as needed
  • Assists with creation of Concrete Poetry exhibition website and PowerPoint presentations
  • May deliver exhibition tours
  • Assists curator with acquisition research comprising evaluation of asking prices, database research, assessment of research value through literature search and bibliographic research
  • Assembles and organizes online and paper files for complex archival acquisitions and assists with writing acquisition forms
  • Assists with organizing public programs related to exhibitions


  • *  Master’s degree in art history or related field

    *  0-2 years research experience (education may be considered)

    *  Working knowledge in at least one foreign language, preferably German

    *  Specialization in the modern period, or modern and contemporary, preferred

    *  Working knowledge of music history a plus

Job Posting: Art History Research Assistant, Art vérité, Oak Park (Chicago area) IL

For the record: This is a borderline “unicorn” position, and I am posting it reluctantly! (If you want to hire someone with a masters degree and foreign language skills, pay them a decent wage!)

The Research Assistant conducts research for a series of art history videos and some administration of Art vérité, including maintenance of special projects, phone inquiries, and maintaining calendar.

• Conducts extensive research and data collection for Art vérité video production projects

• Maintains and updates systems for tracking materials as they enter the Art vérité archives

• Assists with cataloging of photo assets in database

• Assists with license and copyright permission requests and agreements

• Maintains and regularly updates bibliographical lists


• MA or higher in Art History, Library and Information Science, Museum Studies or a related field from an accredited institution

• Knowledge and experience of art historical terminology and concepts

• Ability and willingness to maintain a high level of accuracy and attention to detail Excellent written and oral communication skills

• Fluency in English and German, French, Spanish or Italian ideal; document translation ability

• General understanding of databases and operating systems, including familiarity with FileMakerPro and Evernote; experience working with social media systems, including LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, WordPress and Instagram


Minimum five (5) years related experience in arts-based business or organization

CONTRACT POSITION (Chicago area location)

Part Time with possibility of increase of hours

• Overnight travel may be required
