Opportunity: Call for Guest Writers for the ArLiSNAP Blog

The Blog Editors of Art Library Students & New ARLIS Professionals (ArLiSNAP) would like to invite guest writers to contribute to our blog: http://arlisnap.arlisna.org/

This writing opportunity is open to all! We welcome posts from art information paraprofessionals, professionals, students, and prospective art librarians! This could include anyone working with visual and performing arts, new media, and other arts-related collections. We also welcome posts from people who started their careers in librarianship and/or art information but have moved on to other arts-adjacent fields.

Choose from one of our suggested themes below, or propose a topic of your own! You do not need to have any previous writing experience. We will work with you to edit your work.

Review a conference or seminar (including virtual webinars and other online experiences)

Call for Submissions – Pathfinder Journal

Pathfinder: A Canadian Journal for Library Science Students and Early Career Professionals is excited to announce that it is now welcoming original scholarship in the fields of library science, information studies, and archives from current Canadian LIS or archival students, library tech students, and early career professionals (individuals that have graduated from information science programs within the past 2 years).

Save the Date + Call for Presenters: ArLiSNAP / VREPS 2021 Fall Virtual Conference

Art Library Students and New ARLIS/NA Professionals (ArLiSNAP) and Visual Resources Association’s Emerging Professionals And Students Group (VREPS) invite you to save the date for our 2021 Fall Virtual Conference.

This conference is open to all, but focuses on the needs of students and new professionals. Attendees interested in art librarianship or visual resource management will have the opportunity to learn from peers and celebrate each other’s work through virtual posters and presentations. Via this conference, we’re seeking to foster a sense of belonging and growth in our community, and we invite all interested students and new professionals to participate.

Our calls for students and new professionals to present in different sessions are outlined below. If you have any questions in the meantime, please send an email to ArLiSNAP: arlisnap.na@gmail.com.

CALL FOR VIRTUAL POSTER PRESENTATIONS:

ArLiSNAP and VREPS welcome proposals from students and new professionals with an interest in art librarianship or visual resources management to share newly completed or in-progress projects, be they research or outcomes from an internship/practicum, at the virtual poster presentation at our 2021 Virtual Conference. This is an opportunity for emerging professionals to share their work in a supportive and engaging space while connecting with other students and early career information professionals. Proposals are open to individual presenters and co-presenters. Virtual posters will be available for asynchronous browsing by attendees, with a live Q&A for all presenters during the conference followed by a social hour. Formatting details will be sent if selected.

CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS:

Fresh Eyes: Celebrating Our Successes as New Professionals

Are you a student or emerging professional who solved a problem for your school or institution? Did you complete a huge project during an internship, suggest a new workflow that helped speed up digitization or researcher requests, or start an amazing new program for community members? We want to hear from you!

Students and emerging professionals have the opportunity to bring “fresh eyes” to an institution. These “fresh eyes” can often add valuable perspectives, allowing for opportunities to ask questions, make suggestions, and create new approaches to work that’s been done “the way we’ve always done it.” In the session, speakers will present via lightning talks case studies detailing how they experienced a workflow or problem, and how their suggestions and perspectives as students and emerging professionals helped create a better process or environment. This is a space for us to celebrate the valuable contributions students and emerging professionals can bring to an institution.

This session will feature virtual lightning talks of five to seven minutes from five to six presenters, followed by live Q&A.

Building Belonging

ArLiSNAP and VREPS invites you to share current initiatives in the field of art information focusing on fostering a sense of belonging. Proposals can encompass ongoing, completed or in-progress projects that aim to reshape our art information spaces physically or virtually, for you, your colleagues, or patrons. This prompt is purposefully open-ended to encourage a variety of lenses on how we can rethink and reshape our field. Presentations from students and new professionals can be solo or collaborative.

This session will feature three 15-minute virtual presentations with a live Q&A. Please note we will confer with selected presenters if they wish to be recorded or not.

CALL FOR SKILL SHARE MINI WORKSHOPS:

We are committed to learning and a community that extends beyond our scheduled sessions and agenda. Do you have something you’re currently working on, passionate about, recently discovered, or a practice you find helpful or restorative? During our breaks between sessions, we are looking for volunteers to share their passions and skills with us. Some ideas include a guided breathing exercise, new pandemic hobby, self-care strategy, or in-progress project. These skill shares are meant to be casual and offer space to learn and share what we’re learning with each other.

We will have two breaks during which we want to highlight your knowledge, skills, and interests. If you would like to participate in our Skill Share, please tell us a little bit about what you would like to do and approximately how long you think it would take (3-10 minutes).

The ARLIS 2018 Winter Conference will be held in New York City from February 25-March 1. Registration for the conference is now open, and we hope that you’ll consider attending one of ArLiSNAP’s events while you’re in town.

Join ArLiSNAP at The Stag’s Head on Tuesday, February 27 @ 7:30 PM. Our night out is an opportunity to meet other students and new professionals from around the country to talk about our conference experiences. The pub is just a short walk from the conference, at 252 E 51st St, and we hope to see many of you there!

Travel Award: Mid-Atlantic Caroline Backlund Professional Development Award

Members of the Mid-Atlantic chapter are encouraged to apply for the Caroline Backlund Professional Development Award. More information (including the award’s purpose and requirements) is available on the Mid-Atlantic chapter site, here. Students in the Mid-Atlantic region are additionally encouraged to join the ARLIS/NA Mid-Atlantic chapter if they have not done so already. Joining is free for students! More information about joining for both students and professionals is available here. Once you are a member, you are eligible to apply for the Mid-Atlantic Conference Travel Award.

2017 Lois Swan Jones Professional Development Award Announcement

Applications Due: November 21, 2016

The ARLIS/NA Texas-Mexico Chapter is pleased to announce the 2017 Lois Swan Jones Professional Development Award. This $500 award encourages active involvement of a member of the Texas-Mexico Chapter in the ARLIS/NA 45th Annual Conference held in New Orleans, February 5-9, 2017.

The award honors the memory of Lois Swan Jones, Professor Emerita of art history at the University of North Texas, by underwriting participation of members of the Texas-Mexico Chapter at the ARLIS/NA annual meeting.

The award committee urges everyone with interest and need to apply, especially first-time conference attendees. To meet the primary requirement, applicants must lack full institutional funding. Previous winners are eligible. Applicant must be a member in good standing of both ARLIS/NA and ARLIS/Texas-Mexico.

The deadline for applications is Monday, November 21, 2016. The award committee will announce the winner on Friday, December 2, 2016. Reminder: ARLIS/NA Conference Deadlines Coming Up!

Two major deadlines for the 2017 ARLIS/NA Conference in New Orleans are coming up within the next week!

Travel awards:

Applications for travel awards, three of which are specifically allocated for student travel! All travel award applications are due Monday, October 31, and current membership in ARLIS/NA is only required for one of the student awards. New Voices in the Profession:

The New Voices in the Profession session of the ARLIS/NA annual conference is always a great opportunity for students and new professionals to present their work and get some conference experience while engaging with the larger ARLIS/NA community. The deadline to submit a proposal for the 2017 conference in New Orleans is this Friday, October 28!

Paper proposals for the New Voices in the Profession session at the 2017 ARLIS/NA conference in New Orleans are now being accepted!

New Voices in the Profession showcases exceptional academic work by students and new professionals (under 5 years post MLS). Paper topics should relate strongly to Art Librarianship, but could also pertain to digital library projects, visual resources, archives, library instruction, reference and the changing nature of libraries, among other topics. Paper topics that relate to the conference theme of collaboration and diversity, “Arts du Monde,” will be given special consideration.

2016 ARLIS/SE Professional Development Travel Award

Are you an art librarian or library student living in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, and the U.S. Virgin Islands territory?

Is one of your New Years Resolutions to be more involved in professional associations?

The Southeast Chapter Travel Award is an excellent opportunity to help fund your conference travel.

Our best candidate will receive a $500 (USD) award to attend the joint ARLIS/NA and VRA conference in Seattle, WA on March 8-12, 2016.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this award is to cultivate a talented, dedicated, and educated group of professionals for the ARLIS/NA organization as well as the ARLIS/NA-SE chapter.

Funds from this award may be used to pay for travel, lodging, registration and meals associated with professional development activities at the annual ARLIS/NA conference.

ELIGIBILITY

Any individual meeting these criteria may apply for the award; however first-time attendees are given preference.

Currently reside in the geographic area served by the ARLIS/NA-SE chapter (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, and the U.S. Virgin Islands).
Membership in ARLIS/NA-SE and ARLIS/NA at the time of application is not required,
although preference will be given to current ARLIS/NA-SE members.
Currently be either employed in the field of art librarianship and/or visual resources curatorship, or enrolled in an educational program leading to a graduate degree.
Current students, individuals beginning their professional career within the field of Art Information in the past five years, and paraprofessionals who are becoming active in ARLIS/NA or ARLIS/SE for the first time may be included.
All individuals meeting these criteria may apply for the award; however, first-time attendees are given preference.
Recipients of the award may not reapply in future years.

AWARD RECIPIENT DUTIES

The travel award recipient is expected to:

Participate in the ARLIS/NA Conference Networking program (if they have not previously done so).
Attend the ARLIS/NA-SE Chapter meeting at the annual ARLIS/NA conference.
Submit a written report on his or her conference activities within one month of the conference. The report should be submitted to the ARLIS/NA-SE webmaster to be posted to the ARLIS/NA-SE webpage.
Serve on the 2017 Professional Development Travel Award Committee and subsequently chair the committee in 2018.

Award applications will be accepted up until midnight on Friday, January 29th, 2016. The award winner will be contacted no later than Friday, February 5th, 2016.

Exhibit, Instruct, Promote: An Introduction to Omeka for Digital Scholarship

The Visual Resources Association Foundation is pleased to announce that “Exhibit, Instruct, Promote: An Introduction to Omeka for Digital Scholarship” will be held at Hunter College/CUNY on February 19th, 2016, one of two workshops being offered in the first year of the VRAF Regional Workshop Program. This workshop will be hosted by the Judith and Stanley Zabar Art Library, City University of New York, Hunter College, and is open to image management professionals, image users, and the broader information and educational community. The VRAF is grateful to the Samuel H. Kress Foundation for their generous support of this new opportunity.

Omeka is a rich, open-source web publishing tool with a diverse array of functions for digital scholarship projects. For information professionals, faculty and students, Omeka can provide an easy way to publish and share digital content, as well as serve as a platform for building online exhibitions as academic and/or student projects. In this full-day workshop, participants will be provided with a comprehensive overview of both Omeka.net (hosted) and Omeka.org (installed on a server) and case studies that demonstrate the use of Omeka in a variety of contexts, ranging from providing access to digital collections to projects that engage students in the learning process. While focused on Omeka, this workshop also will touch on other similar tools used for digital scholarship (such as Scalar) and offer practical information for planning digital projects.

Instructor

“Exhibit, Instruct, Promote: An Introduction to Omeka for Digital Scholarship” will be taught by Meghan Musolff, Special Projects Librarian for Library IT, the University of Michigan Library. Her specific area of focus includes coordinating the U-M Library’s implementation of Omeka for the creation and presentation of online exhibits.
