Paid Fellowship Opportunity: Barra American Art Fellowship, Philadelphia Museum of Art

Barra American Art Fellowship

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is looking to fill the Barra American Art Fellowship for the 2017-2018 Academic Year. This position is generously endowed by The Barra Foundation in honor of Robert L. McNeil, Jr., with additional support provided in 2017-18 by Mr. and Mrs. William C. Buck and from the Robert L. McNeil Endowments for American Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

One fellow will be chosen to join the Department of American Art during the academic year. The fellow will work full-time, assisting four days a week in ongoing department research and exhibition projects, with one day reserved for personal research, writing, or travel. Applicants should have completed their M.A. degree in art history or a related field and propose a thesis or area of research interest that can take advantage of the resources of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and other area libraries and institutions. Priority will be given to those with projects relating to the Museum’s collection or exhibition program, and to students from the Philadelphia region. Fellows will have library privileges at the PMA and the University of Pennsylvania. At the conclusion of the term, the Barra Fellow will be expected to give a lecture and submit a paper reflecting work done during the residency.

The fellow will be expected to work full-time (35 hours per week) during the academic year from September 2017 through August 2018.

The fellowship stipend is $40,000 over twelve months with additional research and travel funds and two weeks of discretionary time off.

Internship Opportunity: Digitization Intern, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, PA

Digitization Intern

The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts’ Dorothy and Kenneth Woodcock Archives is seeking a Digitization Intern for a temporary grant funded project. Reporting directly to the Director of the Dorothy and Kenneth Woodcock Archives, this position will entail the creation of new digital archives that will be accessible to the public. This position will also include writing and publishing blog posts related to the collection.

Hours: up to 21 hours per week, Monday-Friday between the hours of 9:00 AM-5:00 PM

Responsibilities:

The Digitization Intern will be responsible for all stages of digitizing and processing photographs.

  • Preparing and scanning film negatives, transparencies, and photographic prints in adherence with institutional and archival standards
  • Calibrating all components of the digital capture system, including software preferences, scanner and lighting settings
  • Minimally process scanned images using Photoshop
  • Creating archival masters as well as derivatives for storage and delivery
  • Perform quality assurance (QA) of scans
  • Rehousing all materials

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate is pursuing a graduate degree in Library and Information Science, Museum Studies, or Archival Studies and has the following skills:

  • Experience working in libraries and archives
  • Familiarity with archival and digitization standards
  • Experience with digital retouching a plus
  • Ability to work independently and perform repetitive tasks
  • Ability to work in cool environments for extended periods of time

Compensation: A stipend will be provided for the duration of the internship–$3,000 (300 hours). Benefits include free admission to museum.

Summary

Penn Libraries seeks an accomplished, energetic, service-oriented and creative librarian to serve the Univ. of Pennsylvania’s Archaeology & Anthropology Museum Library. This position carries a number of responsibilities including serving as the primary library research and collections liaison to the Department of Anthropology; supporting the core curatorial areas within the Penn Museum; and supporting the museum’s departments of Academic Engagement and Learning Programs. This position will provide liaison services to Museum curators, keepers, staff, and related interdisciplinary and area studies constituencies on campus. Also critical to this position is creative engagement with the wide variety of graduate and undergraduate students affiliated with the museum. The Museum Library provides access to and support for new, innovative forms of digital scholarship, scholarly communication, and pedagogy in ancient, archaeological, and anthropological studies and this position will be central to helping coordinate these conversations with a diverse group of librarians, faculty, students, and museum staff.

The museum librarian will:
Build current and retrospective collections in all formats; manage general and restricted endowed acquisitions funds; coordinate preservation, digitization, and other aspects of collection maintenance, including selection for offsite storage; and provide general and specialized research assistance for Penn Museum staff, Penn faculty and students, visiting research fellows and scholars from the US and abroad. The librarian provides public services and bibliographic instruction in the use of print and electronic resources in various library and classroom settings; creates resource guides and web sites to assist students and researchers; consults with staff in the Information Processing Center to facilitate timely acquisitions and processing; and coordinates service and collection policies closely with other subject specialist and area studies librarians. This position also will have some supervisory responsibilities including oversight of general circulation and access services, document delivery services, and library facilities. This librarian represents Penn in the relevant regional, national, and international professional and scholarly organizations.

Under the supervision of the Fisher Fine Arts Head Librarian, this position falls within the Teaching, Research, and Learning Directorate.

Requirements:

  • An ALA-accredited Master’s degree in library science or equivalent combination of education and professional library experience
  • Demonstrated academic strength in a field pertinent to Anthropology, Archaeology, or Museum Studies.
  • 3-5 years professional library work in an academic or research library
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work successfully and collegially with a diverse group of colleagues and scholars
  • A demonstrated understanding of current developments in information and museum studies
  • Significant experience with research tools available for the use of researchers in the humanities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or Museum Studies
  • Broad familiarity with academic research in the fields represented within the Museum;
  • Reading proficiency in a foreign language
  • Experience conducting instruction in an academic setting or experience with public outreach programs or equivalent experience with instruction, outreach, and assistance for individual researchers

Job Posting: Digital Collections Project Assistant, The Library Company of Philadelphia, PA

Digital Collections Project Assistant

The Library Company of Philadelphia, an internationally-renowned research library specializing in American and Global history before 1900, is currently seeking a Digital Collections Project Assistant to help migrate its digital collections from Digitool to Islandora, an open source digital repository. Working under the IT Manager and the Digital Collections Librarian, the project assistant’s duties will include, but not be limited to:

*assisting in the implementation and development of the migration process;

*packaging of content;

*metadata cleanup;

*organization and conversion of files;

*monitoring the system for quality assurance/control;

*developing workflows for future use;

*communicating with vendors;

*working with an IT consultant on system implementation;

*training and assisting users with all aspects of the new system.

This is a one year grant-funded position that is scheduled to begin June 1st, 2016. Based on the applicant’s availability, the start date may begin in May. Salary commensurate with experience. No benefits.  Review of applications will begin on April 1st and continue until the position is filled.

Qualifications:

  • A. in Library and/or Information Science or equivalent professional experience.
  • A minimum of two years of work-related experience in digital collections and/or digital asset management;
  • Working knowledge of platforms for storing and managing digital assets (experience with Islandora is highly preferred).
  • A general understanding of metadata standards and schema including MARC, Dublin Core and MODS; also experience working in XML.
  • Strong computer and organizational skills, attention to detail, and experience with spreadsheets.

Digital Asset Librarian

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is currently seeking a Digital Asset Librarian. Working under the general direction of the Arcadia Director of the Library and Archives, the Digital Asset Librarian will develop, implement, and sustain an institution-wide digital asset management system (DAMS), in close collaboration with the Information and Interpretive Technology (IIT) department. This position is responsible for all workflows associated with the DAMS from metadata standards, system maintenance, training and outreach initiatives, to supporting internal and public awareness, understanding, and use of the Museum’s digital media assets.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, working with both individuals and departments to research, recommend, implement, develop and sustain a DAMS. The Digital Asset Librarian will collaborate with key stakeholders to codify and implement digital media asset metadata standards and workflows. In close partnership with IIT, he/she will select a system and plan system customizations, upgrades, integrations, testing, and maintenance; provide day-to-day and long-range administrative and strategic oversight of the DAMS. He/she will play a key role in vendor communications and management; lead user training and assist users with all aspects of the system; develop and maintain systems and product documentation and user workflows and policies.

Qualified applicants will have: a Master’s degree in Library Science or equivalent degree, with strong digital content, metadata, systems, and/or comparable focus; demonstrated experience in implementing an institution-wide DAMS, managing metadata, born-digital and digitized media assets; a general understanding of network operating systems, SQL and Web tools and applications, e.g., API, PHP; demonstrated experience with user support and services, collections management systems, web technologies; excellent interpersonal skills, with a focus on rapport-building, listening and questioning skills, and a demonstrated ability to interact well with both technical and non-technical colleagues, system vendors and general users; excellent organizational, follow-through and communication skills, including training, writing procedures and documentation; proven ability to multi-task, adhere to project timelines, work under pressure, and quickly make difficult decisions; proven ability and commitment to working independently, yet collaboratively and pan-institutionally.
