Job Posting: Archivist – Metadata Creator and Research Assistant, AHL Foundation, New York, NY

AHL Foundation is a non-profit visual arts organization with a mission to support artists of Korean heritage working in the United States. AHL provides artist grants, scholarships and professional development opportunities for artists along with public programs that fosters greater public awareness of the cultural contribution of Korean artists through exhibitions, public art projects, artist studio visits, lectures, workshops, museum tours and art history classes.

METADATA CREATOR
AHL is currently looking for a metadata creator to help create an artist-based archive with the artists’ biographical information and image files. The project will start immediately and be continued for several months. An ideal candidate would be someone with experience with visual database systems or artist archives. Experience with metadata schemas (particularly EAC-CPF) and controlled vocabularies such as the Getty thesauri, LCSH and VIAF is strongly preferred. Knowledge of Korean is a plus, although not required.

Compensation will be commensurate with experience, but we are thinking of $15-18 an hour for a minimum of 20 hours. Working remotely may be possible for part of the project. However, we expect to work together in the office for the initial phase. Please do not apply if you cannot commute. Our office is located in Manhattan.

RESEARCH ASSISTANT
AHL is also looking to hire a research assistant to work with the metadata creator in creating the archive. The research assistant will research, contact artists, clear copyright issues, and compile the artists’ biographical information and image files. An ideal candidate would be someone with a strong interest in Asian artists and culture and MUST be able to read/understand Korean. Experience with visual database systems or artist archives is a plus. Small stipend is available.

Overall Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Collections Information Manager, the Digital Assets Manager (DAM) oversees the day-to-day administration of an enterprise-level digital asset management system (DAMS). In this position you will organize, describe, and disseminate digital assets that relate to our encyclopedic collection of almost 50,000 works of art. Working collaboratively with interdepartmental team members, you will develop and support sustainable practices around the digital asset lifecycle to ensure the long-term availability and integrity of a wide variety of assets.

QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent combination of experience and knowledge highly desirable.
Knowledge of museum purposes, organization, and programs. Previous museum experience a strong plus.
Demonstrated experience with databases, digital asset and collections management systems, web technologies, user support and services, and project management.
Experience with metadata mapping, extraction, and embedding tools, such as Adobe Bridge, Adobe Lightroom, Camera RAW processors, and DAMS products.
Understanding of digital asset lifecycle: capture, formats and codecs, metadata, color management, file conversion, dissemination, etc.
Excellent organizational, analytical, time-management, and problem-solving skills necessary.
Excellent written, oral, and visual communication proficiencies necessary. Must be able to explain technical issues to non-technical users.

Samuel H. Kress Foundation Summer Educational Institute Scholarships for
SEI 2012.

The Samuel H. Kress Foundation, http://www.kressfoundation.org/, has
generously agreed to sponsor five scholarships for the 2012 Summer
Educational Institute. SEI 2012 will be held at the University of New
Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI, June 19-22, 2012. The intensive three and a
half-day workshop will feature a curriculum that specifically addresses
the requirements of today’s professional, and will include hands-on and
lecture modules. Expert instructors will cover intellectual property

Job Posting: Access Librarian & Metadata Coordinator at the Corcoran Library

The Corcoran Library seeks an innovative, energetic, and team-oriented individual for the position of Access Librarian and Metadata Coordinator. Reporting to the Library Director, this ¾ position is responsible for the overall concept of “access” as it relates to public and technical services. This position works afternoons and evenings, and at least one weekend a month.

Duties and Responsibilities

Manages quality front-line library operations, including circulation, interlibrary loan, course reserves, e-reserves, stacks management. This position also provides library orientations and instruction. Coordinates access to physical and digital collections by creating accurate metadata records in a variety of formats including MARC, Dublin Core, MODS, VRA Core, and other standards as appropriate. The successful candidate will bring energy and an expansive vision to the Library, leading the effort to optimize metadata output and finding new ways to use metadata to expose the Library’s collections. This position is also responsible for serials check-in and other duties as assigned. Successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in professional associations to further develop the library and the institution.

Job Posting: Archives Assistant Internship at the Felix Gonazalez-Torres Foundation

Archives Assistant Internship

The Felix Gonzalez-Torres Foundation is seeking a high-level graduate intern to assist the Archives Specialist. The ideal candidate will have archival experience; knowledge of photography and digital imagery; strong visual, research and communication skills; and be detail-oriented. Although not an exhaustive list, the following projects will be the focus of the internship: processing archives; scanning slides and entering metadata; creating a cataloging system for archival samples; and digitizing, cataloging and re-housing original artwork. Experience with Photoshop and scanning equipment is required. Experience with FileMaker is preferred. Applicant must be a flexible thinker who has a passion and a mind for the nuances of conceptual work and the unique malleability of Gonzalez-Torres’ oeuvre.

Felix Gonzalez-Torres (1957-1996) is one of the most significant artists of the last twenty years. His work has been the focus of several major one-person museum exhibitions. Retrospectives of his work have been organized by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (1995), the Sprengel Museum in Hanover (1997), the Serpentine Gallery, London (1999), Hamburger Bahnhof, Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Berlin (2006) and the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (2008). In 2007 Gonzalez-Torres posthumously represented the United States at the 52nd Venice Biennale. In the past year, Gonzalez-Torres’ work was shown at retrospectives at the Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporaneo in Mexico City, and at the Wiels Center for Contemporary Art, Brussels, which traveled to the Fondation Beyeler, Basel and the Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt am Main in 2011.

The Felix Gonzalez-Torres Foundation was established in 2002, and is dedicated to the promotion of visual and creative arts. In furtherance of this educational mission, the Foundation fosters appreciation and serious study of the works of Felix Gonzalez-Torres among the general public, scholars and art historians, through activities such as sponsoring scholarly research, books and projects, and organizing public exhibitions of the work of Felix Gonzalez-Torres.
