Job Posting: Manager, Image Collections and Fieldwork Archives, Dumbarton Oaks, DC

Duties & Responsibilities    

  • Oversee the operations of the Image Collection and Fieldwork Archives, including
    • processing, arranging, describing, and accessioning
    • developing collection agreements
    • conducting provenance and intellectual property research
    • coordinating communications with internal and external constituencies
  • Manage collection preservation for all collections in the Research Library
    • collaborate in identifying materials for treatment
    • consult on treatment options for collection materials
    • monitor and evaluate work performed internally and externally
  • Supervise ICFA projects to ensure timely and within-budget completion
  • Oversee digitization projects, including
    • internal and external workflows
    • imaging and metadata standards
    • metadata and digital asset management
  • Coordinate public services for ICFA collections in collaboration with other Library staff
  • Maintain and improve collection security protocols in collaboration with other Library staff

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Manager of the Image Collection and Fieldwork Archives will hire, train, and evaluate (one to three) ICFA staff (permanent, part-time, and/or term).

Basic Qualifications

Master’s degree in library and information science and graduate degree in Art History or allied field. Experience evaluating, acquiring, and processing archival or image materials. Experience working with digital library repository tools and working experience with EAD and VRA Core. Experience with digitization standards and procedures. Familiarity with library security procedures. Supervisory experience in a library or academic setting.

Additional Qualifications

Academic specialization in a field related to the programs of study supported by Dumbarton Oaks (i.e. Byzantine, Pre-Columbian, or Garden and Landscape Studies). Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills. Ability to work effectively in teams and small groups. Strong commitment to public service. Fluency in a language relevant to the Dumbarton Oaks collections (e.g. Greek, Spanish, Turkish) or reading knowledge of another European research language (e.g. French, German, Italian) an advantage.
