Job Description

Art Advisory & Curatorial Intern

An art advisory and curatorial firm in Toronto is seeking a new team member. The position offers the right candidate the opportunity to participate in the development of museum exhibitions and advising private clients on top-tier art collections. The firm requires an Intern who can actively contribute to ongoing projects, who shows consistent initiative, and who is dedicated to the growth of the company. The successful candidate will work directly with the Project Manager and President on all projects.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following:

  • Familiarity with/interest in the art world, preferably with some experience in art history, curatorial work, or design
  • Excellent writing, editing, and research skills
  • Technological skills: highly proficient in social media, file management, and computer literacy
  • Good strategy and problem-solving ability
  • Positive and collaborative approach
  • Fluency in Photoshop and other graphic design an asset
  • Background in art business and/or public relations an asset

This position reports to the Director of Patron Services and New Media and is responsible for leading the efforts to acquire, preserve, catalogue, describe and provide access to archives materials and special collections materials. This includes developing processes for the routine acquisition, preservation and access of archives materials created by the National Arts Centre (NAC) and serving as an expert in assessing preservation and access needs for archives materials.

The incumbent also acts as custodian of the NAC’s fine arts collection. He/She plans and oversees the arrangement, cataloguing and exhibition of collections, including online exhibits and, along with the Assistant Archivist and the New Media Senior Project Manager and Strategy Analyst, maintains the collections. He/She also researches topics or items relevant to the collections.

Skill Requirements:

– Bachelor’s degree in archival science, history, fine arts or a related discipline and a minimum of five (5) years of experience in an archives environment and two (2) years of experience in the design, development and implementation of a content management system (CMS); or an equivalent combination of education and experience;

– Excellent knowledge of archival management practices and concepts, content management systems, procedures, legislation, methodology and techniques;

– Experience managing budgets and complex projects;

– Experience working with archive organizations and associations and the performing arts in Canada;

– Experience in managing collections of theatrical and performing arts artifacts;

– Experience overseeing the planning, development and presentation of exhibits; including online exhibits;

– Strong time management skills to coordinate activities and adhere to planning process timelines;

– Ability to assess operational requirements and to develop and implement operational policies and procedures;

– Experience with content management systems (CMS);

– Excellent knowledge of computer applications (MS Office, Word, Excel, Outlook and  Adobe Acrobat);

– Excellent interpersonal skills and a high degree of professionalism, discretion and confidentiality;

– Bilingualism in both official languages is a strong asset.

Programming: Working under the supervision of Gallery 1C03’s Director/Curator, the Intern will assist with the organization and presentation of a University of Winnipeg faculty, staff, and student exhibition. Tasks include assisting with promotion via social media and other means, assisting with exhibit installation, creating artwork labels, attending the exhibition during public hours of operation, assisting with de-installation of exhibit. The Intern will also organize and carry out a two-day, off-site, educational art workshop or other public program during the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival as part of a city-wide art gallery public program project.

Collections Management: Working under the supervision of Gallery 1C03’s Director/Curator, the Intern will conduct an inventory of selected works in the collection and carry out on-campus artwork loan requests. Through this process the intern will help the Art Curator identify and prioritize selected pieces for conservation treatment as the University’s budget allows. The Intern will also input appraisal values for those works where that information had not been entered but for which there exist paper records. If time allows, the Intern will assist in the development and distribution of exhibition and copyright release forms for selected works in the collection.

Curatorial Research: The Intern will conduct research on selected artworks in the collection identified by the Director/Curator in preparation for a forthcoming conservation and/or exhibition projects.

Art Collection Library Management: Gallery 1C03 also oversees a small library of publications on contemporary and historical Canadian art. The Intern will accession new titles into the library collection database, and participate in the distribution of the Gallery’s publications to other institutions to make them available to researchers.
