Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Dean of Academic Affairs and in collaboration with the Director of Learning Resources and Centralized Library Services Team, the Librarian ensures school library functions and services are appropriate and properly planned, implemented, and managed. The Librarian assists the school community in use of the library materials and resources through appropriate and meaningful information literacy and instruction programs as well as reference and research support. The librarian assists the school community with use of academic support services and technology including tutoring, assessments, student portals, learning management systems, and others.

Key Job Elements:

  • Plan, coordinate, conduct, and assess library and information literacy instruction sessions and programs.
  • Provide reference and research assistance to school community.
  • Assist school community use of academic support and technology platforms and services including tutoring, student portal and others.
  • Author, implement, evaluate and update school library policies and procedures in close collaboration with the school Dean of Academic Affairs, system Director of Learning Resources, and Centralized Library Services Team.
  • Maintain library in an orderly manner; perform regular inventory, weed materials, and engage in minor catalog updates when requested by Centralized Library Services Team.
  • Process and maintain print periodicals, tracking receipt and filing claims for missing issues.
  • Receive, inspect and oversee shelving of materials purchased through Centralized Library Services Team.
  • Inform Centralized Library Services Team of school community suggested library purchases.
  • Collaborate with School Dean of Academic Affairs, Institutional Effectiveness staff, and Centralized Library Services Team in compiling and submitting information and reports for both internal and external (accreditation) purposes.
  • Serve on school committees in order to promote, share, and gather information regarding library and related support services.
  • Collaborate with school IT to oversee library hardware and software, including AV equipment.
  • Aid Dean of Academic Affairs in selecting, training, and supervising Library Assistants and Student Library Assistants when applicable.
  • Administer academic placement and certification tests when applicable.
  • Conduct long range planning related job function.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Interacts With: System Director of Learning Resources, System Centralized Library Services Team, faculty, students, administration and staff

Job Requirements:

Knowledge:

  • Master’s Degree in Library, Information Science, or related from an ALA accredited school
  • At least one year experience working in a post-secondary institution library
  • Previous experience delivering instruction preferred
  • Knowledge of subjects taught by Art Institute system
  • Knowledge of library and educational technologies

Job Posting: Sherman Art Library Information Assistant, Dartmouth College, Hanover NH

Responsibilities:
• Opens Sherman Art Library (turning all the lights on, straightening up the reference & reading room, opening art special, logging in the desk computer);
• Supervises the student assistants, and managing the desk schedule;
• Coordinate new student assistant training with the Visual Arts Librarian;
• Check in new journals, pull older issues for the bindery or barcode ;
• Assist with collection maintenance (check for ‘in transit too long’ items, missing books, re-shelve reference materials, etc.);
• Assist with processing gift books (check to see if it we have other copies/editions, etc.);
• Assist with check in of new art special materials and the shelving and maintenance of the art special collection;
• Possibly assist with special projects.

Fellowship Opportunity: Hawn Gallery Curatorial Fellowship, Hamon Arts Library, Southern Methodist University, TX

The Mildred Hawn Exhibition Gallery in the Jake and Nancy Hamon Arts Library, SMU, serves a central role of community engagement in the arts. The mission of the gallery is to hold exhibitions by student and faculty members and professionals in the performing and visual arts, regionally, nationally and abroad, which center on academic areas represented in the Hamon Arts Library’s collections and the curriculum of the Meadows School of the Arts and to encourage and share critical discourse with its patron community. These exhibitions serve as a provocative and extended experience in the learning environment of Hamon and Meadows through its installations, gallery talks and Hamon blog.

Reporting to the Director of the Hamon Arts Library, the Curatorial Fellow manages all elements of the exhibitions in the Hawn Gallery and adjoining lobby area in the Hamon Arts Library. The Curatorial Fellow will develop their exhibition program in conversation with the Hawn Gallery Exhibition Committee, working closely with the Director of the Hamon Arts Library. The duties include:

  • Plan, develop, and coordinate two to three gallery exhibitions for installation during the 2016- 2017 academic term
  • Manage administrative requirements, including loan forms, shipment arrangements, installation schedules, and related matters
  • Coordinate installation and de-installation of exhibitions, program events, activities, gallery talks, and Hamon Blog posts related to the exhibitions
  • Develop strategies to expand and promote audience engagement among artists, students, faculty, and library staff at SMU and in the Dallas community
  • Develop marketing materials for exhibitions and related events, including press releases and publicity kits, blog posts, and contributions to social media
  • Participate in archiving exhibitions, in coordination with library staff

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Art History, Curatorial Studies, or Museum Studies (required)
  • Experience mounting exhibitions and handling works of art in a gallery or museum (required)
  • Educational background in Contemporary art is preferred
  • Experience working in a library environment is a plus
