2022 Dance/USA Summer Archiving Fellowships

Dance/USA, the national service organization for professional dance, invites applications for the Dance/USA 2022 Archiving and Preservation Fellowship Program for master’s degree students in library and information sciences and related fields. The theme of this round of Fellowships, generously supported by funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, is Preserving Cultural Heritage, Supporting Communities. 

The goal of the Archiving and Preservation Fellowship Program is to develop an engaged, passionate, and well-trained next generation of archivists in the dance ecosystem and to advance models for community-based archiving assistance to regional dance communities. Dance/USA invites applicants who are committed to advancing a more equitable and inclusive archives field that reflects and supports the true diversity of voices, practices, and identities within dance communities. Applicants should be interested in learning and applying archiving methods that are culturally sensitive and rooted in community practice.

The Photograph Archivist is responsible for evaluating, acquiring, arranging, describing, and providing access to a wide variety of photographic images. Duties:

  • Implements collection development policies, practices, and strategies to ensure that negatives, prints, slides, and other historical photographic images are collected, preserved, and made available for current and future patrons.
  • Reviews and assesses donated materials to determine condition and historical value. Applies archival management theories and methods in determining how collections or images should be cataloged. This includes the physical preparation of materials for long-term preservation and care by arranging and housing them according to national photograph archives standards that are consistent with conditions and technology available within the agency.
  • Produces standardized cataloging in accordance with national library/archives standards for submission to the Montana Historical Society’s online catalogs.
  • Develops, enhances, and maintains electronic information database and patron access systems for the photograph archives.
  • Conducts complex historical research on and compiles histories of individuals, groups, institutions, or businesses to provide a context for newly processed collections or images. Applies archival theories to write descriptive inventories, indices, and other professionally approved reference materials in accordance with national and agency standards for the use of staff, researchers, and state employees.
  • Determines priority of photograph collections or images for processing, based on knowledge of research needs, agency priorities, historical significance, and professional standards.
  • Responds to a wide variety of sophisticated reference inquiries from individuals, state agencies, professionals, educational groups, local organizations, film companies, journalists, publishers and institutions by conducting research and providing information on a broad range of topics.
  • Provides concise and accurate interpretations and analysis of complex historical events based on reference interviews of a wide range of patrons.

Competencies:

  • A thorough knowledge of modern archival theory, standards, and practices and their implementation. This knowledge includes an understanding of appraisal methods, arrangement and description, cataloging, preservation, access and outreach.
  • Thorough knowledge of current and historic photographic processes, signs of deterioration and their individual preservation requirements.
  • Sound knowledge of Montana and/or American history.
  • An understanding of historical research methods in both primary and secondary resources, including photographic research.
  • Ability to communicate both simple and complex ideas effectively, both orally and in writing, to people with various degrees of knowledge of archival theories and of historic research ability.
  • Thorough knowledge of electronic information systems and specialized technology related to archival cataloging and patron information retrieval systems, including MARC and EAD.
  • Experience with ArchivesSpace and Archivists’ Toolkit.

Education/Experience:
This position requires skills and abilities typically acquired through a Bachelor’s degree in history, American studies, or a related field and the completion of a Master’s degree in Library Science, history or a related field that includes emphasis upon photographic preservation and archival care and management of photograph collections.

When completed, all of our materials will be preserved electronically, OCR Readable, and available in-house for reading and research.
Digitization interns will be trained to scan initially, then will be introduced to more complex tasks once they are familiar with the process. Tasks include:

  • Loading, Scanning, and Republishing books while ensuring high quality standards.
  • Training and working as a team.
  • Trouble shooting the scribe machine, mitigating cataloging inconsistencies, and navigating open source software at Internet Archive.
  • Keeping work areas and equipment clean, neat, and organized.

Qualifications:

  • Strong technical (software/hardware) and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to sit for 6-7.5 hour periods, and comfort with repetitive motion
  • Highly organized
  • Excellent attention to detail

Position Summary

The Ryerson and Burnham Library is currently seeking an assistant who will manage image reproduction orders and contracts, process archival collections and provide administrative support for department.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage orders for images (photocopying and image reproduction through Library and/or Museum Imaging Department) and prepare Licensing Contracts when appropriate. Collect all fees for image reproduction from patrons
  • Provide reference assistance with collections to AIC and SAIC staff and external patrons
  • Provide general administrative support, including: maintenance of collection, correspondence and contract files; shelving of collections; monitoring and restocking of supplies

Paid Internship Opportunities: Fall Internships, Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, North Adams, MA

Since opening in 1999, MASS MoCA has become one of the worlds premier centers for making and showing the best art of our time. With annual attendance of 120,000, it ranks among the most visited institutions in the United States dedicated to new art. More than 80 major new works of art and more than 50 performances have been created through fabrication and rehearsal residencies in North Adams, making MASS MoCA perhaps the most fertile site in the country for new art. MASS MoCA seeks full-time interns for various departments (see below). Spend any season in the culturally rich, naturally beautiful Berkshires, while gaining invaluable professional experience in the arts. Paid interns are given $125/week stipend and free housing within a block of the complex (cable, internet, and utilities included). Internship dates: September 12 – December 17, 2016.

Archive / Photography (1): The intern documents all of MASS MoCA’s visual and performing arts programs, as well as the programs’ education activities, art fabrication, studio residencies, development events and the overall vibrancy of our bustling 16-acre, 28-building campus. The intern organizes current and archive material within an online digital assets management system. In addition to comfort shooting still images, the intern should have significant experience in recording moving images and editing video with Final Cut Pro-X. The intern will also contribute to the museum’s social media platforms. A driver’s license might be helpful, but is not required.

Visual Arts (Curatorial) (1): Intern assists in the day-to-day operations of a busy curatorial department and helps with the preparations for upcoming programs, as well as the maintenance of current exhibitions. The Lamont Gallery has launched a Collections Management Initiative in order to identify works in its collections, conduct a complete inventory of objects, identify and care for these objects, and explore the future goal of creating a sustainable collections program. The Collections Assistant/Archives Coordinator will contribute to research, inventory, and object care activities in support of this initiative. This position will report to the Lamont Gallery Director and Curator and Collections Manager.

Key Accountabilities

  • Assist the Collections Manager in the comprehensive physical inventory of objects in Lamont Gallery storage and throughout campus
  • Under the direction of the Collections Manager, contribute to processing of the Lamont Gallery archives for short-term functionality (including contributing to provenance research) and for long-term sustainability (the future development of a searchable electronic record of the gallery’s history and that of the individual objects in its collections)
  • Assist in compiling a narrative timeline of the Lamont Gallery’s collecting history; contribute to reports on key objects, donors, and related gifts
  • Assist Collections Manager and Gallery Manager in the proper installation of art for gallery display, using the standards/best practices as articulated by AAM and AAMG
  • Provide access to the collection as directed by Collections Manager in support of PEA community members engaged in research and scholarship pertaining to Lamont Gallery collection
