Two major deadlines for the 2017 ARLIS/NA Conference in New Orleans are coming up within the next week!

Travel awards:

Applications for travel awards, three of which are specifically allocated for student travel! All travel award applications are due Monday, October 31, and current membership in ARLIS/NA is only required for one of the student awards. New Voices in the Profession:

The New Voices in the Profession session of the ARLIS/NA annual conference is always a great opportunity for students and new professionals to present their work and get some conference experience while engaging with the larger ARLIS/NA community. The deadline to submit a proposal for the 2017 conference in New Orleans is this Friday, October 28!

Paper proposals for the New Voices in the Profession session at the 2017 ARLIS/NA conference in New Orleans are now being accepted!

New Voices in the Profession showcases exceptional academic work by students and new professionals (under 5 years post MLS). Paper topics should relate strongly to Art Librarianship, but could also pertain to digital library projects, visual resources, archives, library instruction, reference and the changing nature of libraries, among other topics. Paper topics that relate to the conference theme of collaboration and diversity, “Arts du Monde,” will be given special consideration.

Virtual Conference 2016 Call for Proposals

DEADLINE EXTENDED!

The ARLIS/NA Mountain West Chapter and The Wild West Chapter of VRA are teaming up to bring you a virtual conference in 2016. We would like to cordially invite you to submit proposals for the Virtual Conference 2016. With an extended deadline we also have decided to broaden the scope. Please feel free to submit a proposal for any project you have completed or that is a work-in-progress. The only criteria we ask proposals be limited to is work within the arts.

The extended proposal deadline is Monday, August 1.

Based on the success of the Mountain West Chapter’s new virtual conference format, we are eager to use the virtual format again. Similar to the last virtual conference, we need a diverse set of presenters. If you have an interesting project that you are currently working on or recently finished, please consider submitting a proposal to present it to your peers. Please note, this call for proposals is open to any; not only members of VRA and ARLIS.

Perhaps you had a proposal turned down for the ARLIS/NA national conference. Here is another opportunity to share it!

Here are the details:

  • Presenters will have their talks prerecorded by a member of our chapter and posted to a private site online.
  • A live Q&A session will happen in December with all the presenters.
  • Conference attendees will be given access to the site and will be able to watch all the presentations at their leisure.
  • Each talk will be accompanied by a discussion board for questions and comments.
  • Sessions will be recorded in late October and posted in November.
  • Each person will have a set amount of time to take and answer questions.
  • This session will be moderated by a member of the Mountain West chapter.
  • The Q&A Session will be recorded and posted to the site if attendees are unable to watch in real time.

Requirements:

1. Proposals need to be focused on the arts but the can include just about any subtopic.

2. Presentations should be limited to 20 minutes.

3. Presenter will work to find a time to record their presentation with a designated member of the Mountain West chapter.

4. Presenter must be available for a live, virtual Q&A session on December 2.

5. Each presenter will be asked to take questions for 10 to 15 minutes.

ArLiSNAP / VREPS Virtual Conference: CFP Deadline Extended to April 8th!

ArLiSNAP and VREPS are co-hosting a virtual conference on May 21st, 2016. See our original call for proposals here:

  1. Presenters must be MLIS students or new professionals with fewer than five years of experience in the field.
  2. Presentations will be between ten and fifteen minutes in length.
  3. Presenters need to be available for a live presentation and brief Q&A session on the afternoon of Saturday, May 21, 2016. Presenters need to be available for a practice session the week before to test equipment. A date and time for the practice session will be determined at a later date.

Call for Proposals: ArLiSNAP/VREPS Virtual Conference

ARLISNAP Conference 2016

ArLiSNAP (Art Library Students and New ARLIS Professionals) and VREPS (Visual Resources Emerging Professionals and Students) are joining forces to host a virtual conference this May! The conference, Future Perspectives in Art Librarianship: Digital Projects and Initiatives, will take place at 12pm CST May 21, 2016. The conference will consist of a keynote speaker followed by 1.5 to 2 hours of presentations by students and new professionals. This is an excellent opportunity for those who cannot be physically present at our annual conferences to share projects and ideas.

 

Our keynote speaker will be Sara Rubinow. Sara is a Metadata Specialist in the Metadata Services Unit of NYPL Labs, The New York Public Library’s digital innovation unit. Prior to NYPL, Sara worked on projects involving the collections database, digital initiatives, and printed matter at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Sara will discuss her role at NYPL Labs and showcase initiatives intended to engage developers, scholars, artists, and the general public in exploring—and transforming—NYPL’s digital resources and open data sets.

 

We are looking for students and new professionals with an interest in art librarianship or visual resources management to present their work. The theme for this year’s conference is focused on digital projects and initiatives. Have you been working on a project using technology in a new way? Do you have thoughts to share on topics such as metadata and visual resources, copyright and the arts, digital collections, or visual literacy? Would you like to share your work with the ARLIS and VRA communities? Submit your proposal, and add your voice to our discussion on the future of the field!

Student Essay Contest: “indexing and retrieval of non-textual information” by ASIS&T

The Special Interest Group for Arts and Humanities (SIG-AH) and the Special Interest Group for Visualization, Images, & Sound (SIG-VIS) of the Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) are seeking previously unpublished papers for a Master’s and a PhD student research paper award. Finalists will be invited to present their research at the Second Virtual Symposium on Information and Technology in the Arts and Humanities (April 27 and 28) and winners will receive a Best Student Paper award and cash prize. Finalist presentations and papers will be archived with other material from the event and published in a formal 2016 Symposium Proceedings.

2016 Theme

The contest theme “indexing and retrieval of non-textual information” is open-ended to invite participation from a variety of theoretical and empirical perspectives on the topic. We encourage graduate-level submissions from a broad range of disciplines including arts, humanities, library and information science, and computer science. Suggested paper topics include, but are not limited to, past research, case studies, and current projects in the areas of:

  • Digital curation of sound and image collections
  • Open access and non-textual material in the humanities
  • Linked data/linked open data
  • Discovery, access, and use of visual content
  • Data curation and data repositories
  • Working with multimedia source materials (maps, models, 3D reconstructions)
  • Visualization in digital collections
  • Search and discovery in the fine and performing arts

Who is Eligible?

Submissions can be made as a single author or a group of authors, including collaborations between students from different institutions. All submitted works should be previously unpublished. Authors do NOT need to be members of ASIS&T. All research is expected to be purely the students’ work. Research undertaken as part of a course, an internship experience, or a thesis project is eligible but attempts should be made to anonymize the paper. Authors are required to secure any necessary permissions related to research findings from internships and thesis projects being used in this research competition.

Requirements & Selection Criteria

While the contest theme and eligibility are open, papers should show an appropriate level of writing and should include an advanced theoretical or empirical discussion, methodology or analysis. Paper submissions must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Word .doc or .docx format
  • Cover page with title, author names, institutional affiliations, and abstract of 250 words or less
  • 10 single-spaced pages or less (approximately 4,000 words), 12 pt. font, using APA citations and bibliography. Tables, graphs, images, etc…may appear within the body of the text.
  • No headers or footers (with exception of page number)
  • Author names should not appear anywhere in the main text

Submission details should be made via electronic form and final papers emailed by the April 4, 2016 deadline (details below).

Papers will be selected based on the following criteria: relevance of topic to the contest theme, originality of research and approach, and quality of student writing. Papers not meeting the above requirements may be excluded from the contest.

Students selected as finalists will be invited to present their research on April 27 or April 28 at the Second Virtual Symposium on Information and Technology in the Arts and Humanitieshttp://www.asis.org/SIG/SIGAH/2016/01/15/2016-symposium/. Award winners will be selected based on the quality of student presentations.

Awards

Two (2) finalist papers may be awarded the Best Master’s Student Paper or the Best PhD Student Paper, including a monetary prize of $500 and 1-year ASIS&T membership. Finalist presentations and papers will be archived with other material from the event and published in a formal 2016 Symposium Proceedings.

Guest Post: Allana Mayer on presenting at the ARLIS/NA-MW Virtual Conference

Allana Mayer is an MLIS student at McGill University in Montreal. She recently gave a presentation at the ARLIS/NA-MW Virtual Conference titled From Commons to Open Content: New Perspectives on Visual Resources in the Public Trust. You can see our post about the conference here.

An art and media focus is hard to incorporate into your MLIS classwork, especially if you want to do more than re-hash ideas that are in the literature but outside of the lecture materials. I’ve found ways to incorporate my interests in photography, multimedia, and digital art as best I can — but I’m finding that the things I’m most passionate about are the hardest to reconcile with my curriculum.

 

I wrote a first-year paper about archival materials posted online via the Flickr Commons, which was a great initiative that fell short in a few specific ways. I was rewarded for this effort with a scholarship to the SLA conference in June, and I think that this positive feedback made me a bit more passionate for projects that make digitized visual resources freely available online. So, of course I paid attention when I started hearing about open content initiatives over the summer, via listservs like ARLIS. This was also how I heard about the ARLIS/NA Mountain West virtual conference, when they sent out a call for proposals.

 

I find the hardest thing to adapt to is the pace of academia: submitting a proposal two to six months in advance of an actual presentation means lots of time to get bored with an idea, fail, watch an emerging field die, go off on a tangent, get distracted by other things …. It’s nothing like the wham-bam of a three-month semester. This conference presentation happened almost by serendipity — I had just started reading about open-content releases online when the CFP went out, and I was sure there was some potential in the idea, so I kind of went out on a limb.

 

Instead of some polite rejections to learn from, I got a very welcome acceptance. I don’t regret taking the chance to move outside of scholarly publications and tackle an emerging field. The majority of my sources are new initiatives (e.g. the Open Knowledge Foundation), videos, blogs, and press releases by institutions themselves, far from academia.

 

There were few people interested in open content around me, and I didn’t have a visual-arts-librarian perspective to work from. If I could give my presentation again, I’d definitely think more about my ARLIS audience: I did well to present on a topic that wasn’t yet being covered in academic research, but I was speaking as though I was trying to convince institutions to participate, when I should have been talking about how to find, use, and provide these resources to students and patrons.

 

Luckily, a week after my presentation, I volunteered at a museum-technology conference here in Montreal, and attended multiple sessions dedicated to opening up cultural content. I used that opportunity to discuss making a multi-institutional repository where users can easily access open content. I also had a chance to advocate for the Getty and other open-content instigators to publish their processes and case studies, so that other institutions can follow suit and expedite their projects. This sort of confirmation and involvement can really beget itself early on in a career: after being validated like this, I feel a lot more confident about my future work interests.

Tell us all about it! We’re looking for contributors to help us develop more original blog content; let’s start by talking about what our amazing and diverse members are doing.

This is open to all of our students and new professionals (and even the not-so-new!), and can be a great opportunity to share your work or research in an informal, low-key environment. We’ll continue to solicit for more thematic content, so if you’re more research-focused at this point or aren’t quite ready to write, there will be many more chances in the future!

We’ll keep this as informal as possible, while still maintaining some sense of order and decorum (that’s our forte, right?). Given in recognition of outstanding publications/electronic resources by ARLIS/NA Individual members in the fields of librarianship, visual resources curatorship, and the arts.

The form of recognition may range from a certificate of merit to a cash award of up to $1,500.

Nominated works must have been published during the 2010 or 2011 calendar year.

H.W. Wilson Foundation Research Award

This award of up to $3,000 supports research activities by ARLIS/NA members in the fields of librarianship, visual resources curatorship, and the arts.

The award seeks to promote research which benefits the professions of art librarianship and visual resources as well as the broader library profession.

Proposals may address the compilation and dissemination of information, translation of original scholarship, analysis of the professions, or the enhancement of access to information.

Eligible projects include those which result in original scholarship in the arts (performing, architectural, visual, etc.) or aspects of visual and material culture.

Call for Proposals: 11th Annual Milka Bliznakov Prize
IAWA (International Archive of Women in Architecture Center)

Deadline for receipt of proposals: May 31st, 2011

The IAWA invites architects, scholars, professionals, students, and researchers to honor IAWA founder Milka Bliznakov through research on women in architecture and related design fields. This research, in concert with the preservation efforts of the IAWA, will help fill the current void in historical knowledge about women’s professional achievements. The archive encourages such research in addition to the goal of preserving archival materials related to the work of women who shaped the designed environment, thus preserving for posterity a record of their achievements.

The Board of Advisors of the International Archive of Women in Architecture Center (IAWA) presents this Annual Prize of $1000 (with an additional $500 available for travel) following a two-stage process:

STAGE ONE: PROPOSAL SUBMISSION
In Stage One, applicants submit their proposal, which outlines the work they plan to complete at the Archive, and should include the following elements:

1. Outline of research to be completed
2. Proposed schedule for residency to include a talk open to the university community and the general public
3. Intended product of research, a copy of which is to be donated to the archive upon completion.

Examples of the product of research may include, but is not limited to, the following:
• Research paper
• Self-published book documenting the activities and work of the residency
• Notebook or sketchbook produced during the residency
• Visual or physical original work that references or utilizes research from the Archive

A 500-word proposal with curriculum vitae must be received or postmarked by May 31st, 2011. The proposal should be submitted both electronically as a PDF, and as a hardcopy by mail.

Proposals may include an original project, research, or scholarly work that contributes to and advances the recognition of women’s contributions in design.

The proposal shall draw upon and expand the IAWA collections to reflect upon the broader context of women’s contributions in the field of design. The product of the work should be specified in the proposal.

STAGE TWO:
The IAWA Jury awards the Bliznakov Prize for the research proposal that best demonstrates an important advancement to the recognition of women’s contributions to architecture and the related design fields while encouraging the use and growth of the International Archive of Women in Architecture. The winner will be announced by June 15th. The final project must be completed by Dec. 15th, 2011. The final project will become a part of the Archive to contribute to the historical record.

The prize money will be awarded in two installments: the first $500 will be made available to the recipient upon arrival at the IAWA for the residency period, and the second $500 will be paid upon receipt of the final product. Up to $500 will be
available to support travel and residency expenses.
