ARLIS/NA Yearlong Mentoring Program – Deadline 2/25

The ARLIS/NA Yearlong Career Mentoring Program is now recruiting mentors and mentees

Our program begins with a virtual workshop shortly before the 2022 Chicago conference and continues until the 2023 Mexico City conference.  The program has matched dozens of art library professionals in successful mentoring relationships and contributes to the wonderful bonds we have with each other for which the Society is known.

You will only need 1-2 hours a month to participate! You can develop your mentor/mentee relationship by Zoom, Skype, FaceTime, phone calls, or by email.

This year’s workshop is scheduled for Friday, April 1 from 11am PST / 1pm CST / 2pm EST and will take place virtually.

Are You New to Art Librarianship or Looking for Guidance? Apply to be a Mentee!

2022 Dance/USA Summer Archiving Fellowships

Dance/USA, the national service organization for professional dance, invites applications for the Dance/USA 2022 Archiving and Preservation Fellowship Program for master’s degree students in library and information sciences and related fields. The theme of this round of Fellowships, generously supported by funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, is Preserving Cultural Heritage, Supporting Communities. 

The goal of the Archiving and Preservation Fellowship Program is to develop an engaged, passionate, and well-trained next generation of archivists in the dance ecosystem and to advance models for community-based archiving assistance to regional dance communities. Dance/USA invites applicants who are committed to advancing a more equitable and inclusive archives field that reflects and supports the true diversity of voices, practices, and identities within dance communities. Applicants should be interested in learning and applying archiving methods that are culturally sensitive and rooted in community practice.

Paid Summer Internships at the Saint Louis Art Museum (application deadline: February 20, 2022)

The Saint Louis Art Museum is pleased to offer four full-time, paid summer internships in the curatorial and learning & engagement divisionsin 2022. These positions are open to current and recent undergraduate and graduate students.  


Position Summary 

The paid internships at the Saint Louis Art Museum offer opportunities to gain first-hand experience working in a major art museum. Interns will work one-on-one with a staff member from the Curatorial or Learning and Engagement divisions of the Museum to contribute to a specific project. In 2022, projects include: 
Project 1: Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas Internship 

  • The Intern will work with curators in the department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas to conduct research and catalog historic Native American art, focusing on the Donald Danforth Jr. Collection of Plains and Plateau art. Intern will also assist with special exhibition projects for African art. 

Project 2: American Art in the Early Cold War (1939-1963) 

  • The Intern will work with curators in the department of American Art to assist with research for a Cold War exhibition that will bring a socio-political perspective on a wide range of American art produced between 1939 (Hitler-Stalin pact) and 1963 (assassination of Pres. John F. Kennedy). The project will entail research on individual objects, on social/political contexts and artist groups as well as compiling gallery and exhibition histories and contemporaneous reviews. Intern will also assist with exhibition databases and checklists.   

Project 3: Contemporary Ceramics and Craft in St. Louis 

  • The Intern will work with curators in the department of Decorative Arts and Design to conduct research on contemporary ceramics and other craft media in the collection and the community. The intern will strengthen research on artists represented in the collection by compiling annotated bibliographies and artist and exhibition histories and identifying comparative objects and collections. 

Project 4: Research and Planning for the 100th anniversary of education at the Saint Louis Art Museum  

  • The Intern will collaborate with Learning and Engagement staff to research and develop ideas for public programs and activities to mark 2023, the 100th anniversary of SLAM’s education department (now called Learning and Engagement). Tasks may include reviewing materials in the museum archives, helping to create an updated narrative of the history of SLAM’s education department, and assisting in the research for a video or social media campaign celebrating the 100th anniversary of the department.   


The Saint Louis Art Museum is home to a collection of over 37,000 works of art from six continents, dating from ancient times to the present. Curators, together with museum educators, designers, registrars, and many others, work to interpret and present the collection and develop programs that enrich visitor experiences. Over the course of the summer program, interns will have opportunities to learn more about SLAM’s collections through curatorial tours. In addition, they will participate in tours of the conservation facilities, brownbag lunches with department and division heads, and a meeting with the museum’s director. 


Key Information: 

  • – Mandatory start date is Monday, June 13, 2022 
  • – Internship concludes when intern completes 300 hours; duration to be eight or nine weeks 
  • – Work schedule is Monday through Friday, roughly 37.5 hours per week 
  • – Biweekly pay will be $12.50/hour worked, no benefits or holiday pay 
  • – The Saint Louis Art Museum adheres to protocols based on current guidelines from the City’s Department of Health. All potential new hires will be required to show proof of full vaccination against COVID-19. 
  • – The internship will most likely take place on-site, though there may be a potential for remote work. 
  • – Candidates will be considered for specific projects based on interest, qualifications, and project needs.

The Yale University Library welcomes applications for the 2022/23 Kress Fellowship in Art Librarianship. The Kress Fellowship is intended for a recent graduate from library school who wishes to pursue a career in art librarianship, and is made possible through the generosity of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. Through this fellowship, the Kress Foundation seeks to ensure the growth of the discipline by promoting the advancement of new professionals.

The Haas Family Arts Library at Yale serves an array of academic and museum programs, architects, artists and scholars. Kress Fellows have opportunities to interact with faculty, staff and students in the Schools of Architecture, Art, and Drama; Department of the History of Art; and two university art museums, the Yale Center for British Art and the Yale University Art Gallery. They also have opportunities to collaborate with colleagues from throughout the Yale University Library, including the Sterling Memorial Library and the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. The rich professional and scholarly resources of New York City and Boston’s art libraries and museums are within two hours’ travel, providing further opportunities for professional growth and professional contact with colleagues in the region.


The Kress Fellowship is a 10-month appointment and focuses on multiple areas of art librarianship including collection development and management, special collections, digital collections, and public services. Focusing on print special collections this year, projects and activities will draw on subject areas served by the Haas Arts Library including the history of art, architecture, drama, design, and aligned area studies. The fellow will also work one day per weekon a special-collections-focused project at the Yale Center for British Art Institutional Archives.

The fellow will gain experience in reference services and library research education in the Haas Family Arts Library, Arts Library Special Collections, including shifts at service desks and participation in orientations, instruction sessions, and library workshops. Other activities will vary based on current Yale Library needs and the fellow’s interest and experience.

Kress Fellows are expected to pursue mutually agreed-upon projects resulting in tangible deliverables. Kress Fellows are also introduced to a broad spectrum of professional activities and may have the opportunity to assist with collection development activities, archival processing (at the Yale Center for British Art Institutional Archives), or library-based exhibitions. Kress Fellows may participate in library committees and working groups at the Arts Library and the larger Yale Library system. Recent Fellows have taken the lead in running the Arts Library’s social media feeds in collaboration with members of the Arts Library Social Media Team. Fellows are encouraged to be professionally active and involved in the academic, scholarly, and professional community. 


Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program for library and information science (degree must be completed before start date). Academic background in history of art, architecture, or related arts discipline. Excellent analytical, organizational, management, customer service, and interpersonal skills.  Ability to effectively build partnerships and promote the benefits of change in an academic culture that often values ambiguity, diversity of opinion, and historic precedent.  Ability to communicate effectively through both oral and written expression.  Ability to work both independently and collegially in a demanding and rapidly changing environment.

Preferred:  Advanced degree and/or relevant experience in history of art, architecture or related arts disciplines. Experience working with rare materials, cataloguing, archival processing and/or developing digital information resources. Teaching experience and/or customer service experience.


The Kress Fellow will be in residence at Yale for ten months and will receive an award of $40,000, prorated over the fellowship term. Health insurance will be provided.

DescriptionThe intern in Special Collections Cataloging will gain hands-on experience with Getty’s unique research collections, which include archives of artists, architects, dealers and art historians; sketches and drawings; prints from the 16th to the 21st century; and rare photographs. The broad range of subject areas includes, but is not limited to: art collectors and collecting, 20th-century architecture, video and performance art, Latin American art, and African American art, a recently established collecting area in support of the Getty’s African American Art History Initiative. Primary responsibilities will include processing and cataloging special collections, with other projects assigned according to the intern’s skills and interests. Specific tasks may include re-housing and arranging materials, writing finding aids, creating catalog records, writing blog posts, contributing to team-based processing projects, and collaborating on digitization projects. In the event that work-from-home becomes necessary, the internship will pivot to focus on collections management activities and legacy data cleanup work, which will broaden the Special Collections Cataloging intern’s experience using the department’s multiple systems and tools related to archival collections management and cataloging. Additional remote work possibilities include converting legacy PDF finding aids to EAD, and creating records in SNAC (Social Networks and Archival Context) to account for persons, families, and organizations in GRI archival holdings.

Art Library Students and New ARLIS/NA Professionals (ArLiSNAP) and Visual Resources Association’s Emerging Professionals And Students Group (VREPS) invite you to save the date for our 2021 Fall Virtual Conference.

This conference is open to all, but focuses on the needs of students and new professionals. Attendees interested in art librarianship or visual resource management will have the opportunity to learn from peers and celebrate each other’s work through virtual posters and presentations. Via this conference, we’re seeking to foster a sense of belonging and growth in our community, and we invite all interested students and new professionals to participate.
