ARLIS/NA – Twin Cities Summer Book Club: August 24th

ARLIS/NA Twin Cities (Minneapolis/ St. Paul) chapter will be meeting to discuss The Complete Stories of Leonora Carrington.  All are welcome to join in for the discussion.

What: 6th Annual ARLIS/NA-TC Summer Book Club
When: Thursday, August 24, 5-7p
Where: Longfellow Grill, 2990 W River Pkwy (Hopefully on the patio. Happy hour till 6p)

Please RSVP by Monday, August 21st: https://goo.gl/forms/VvxdcZAJmOZmuF0U2

About the book: Surrealist writer and painter Leonora Carrington (1917-2011) was a master of the macabre, of gorgeous tableaus, biting satire, roguish comedy, and brilliant, effortless flights of the imagination. Nowhere are these qualities more ingeniously brought together than in the works of short fiction she wrote throughout her life. Published to coincide with the centennial of her birth, The Complete Stories of Leonora Carrington collects for the first time all of her stories, including several never before seen in print. With a startling range of styles, subjects, and even languages (several of the stories are translated from French or Spanish), The Complete Stories of Leonora Carrington captures the genius and irrepressible spirit of an amazing artist’s life. Twitter chat: #critlib on Visual Literacy, May 17th at 9pm EST

visual culture/literacy

Tomorrow night, join us on Twitter at #critlib to talk about visual culture and literacy for librarians. You’ll need a Twitter account to participate, but not to observe. (And you can wait a few days until someone storifies the tweets if you want to read them later in a more functional chronological display.)

I’ll be in transit during most of the chat but I hope to pop in. (As you may recall, I have some opinions about visual literacy in the digital age.)

Chapter Opportunity: Get involved with ARLIS/NA-Southeast!

The Southeast Chapter of ARLIS/NA will host the annual conference in New Orleans February 5-9, 2017, so opportunities to get involved are already developing and will continue to develop in the coming months.

The ARLIS/NA-SE Chapter serves professionals (and students!) who reside in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. If you live in any of these places, check out the chapter website and see how you can get involved. Here are some current opportunities to highlight:

  • The chapter is hosting its own annual conference November 16-18 in Sarasota, FL, at the Center for Asian Art at the Ringling Museum of Art. More information can be found on the conference website.
  • Chapter Vice-President Kimberly Windham encourages ARLIS/NA-SE members who are located in Florida to apply to serve on the Program Planning Committee for the Sarasota conference. Serving on this committee is a great chance to network and build valuable skills! Interested members may submit a letter of interest to her at kimberly(dot)windham(at)famu(dot)edu
  • The Southeast Chapter also continually runs an informal mentoring program for chapter members. Whether you are a student or new professional, mentoring programs can be very helpful as you get started in your career. More information can be found here and the program comes highly recommended!
