Doing Digital Art History: a data-mining project on open content

Here’s a little data-mining project I absolutely love: charting the colours used in paintings throughout history, by analyzing the pixels of digitized artworks hosted online. (The obvious caveat is to make sure you’re sampling from collections digitized with some fidelity, instead of, say, most of these copies … )

The creator put all of his code in R online, so you could query the exact same collection to do similar analyses with no trouble at all (if you were into that sort of thing).

I made a visualization of the change in colors of paintings over time which a friend tweeted. Several people wanted more info on the method used, so I decided to write a detailed description here, also including the (not very pretty) code I used.

Recently I read a couple of very nice blog post on color use in movies, where colors where extracted from either movie posters or the actual frames of trailers.

I decided to try to do something similar but with data for a longer time period than the era of film. I decided to download images of paintings. So there is a bunch of different sites where you can access (photos of) paintings, e.g. BBC, Google Art Project, Wikiart, Wikimedia commons, and various museums. One of my favorites is the BBC:s site where you can browse through over 200K of well organized paintings! An amazing resource. For many of these there is also information on the year they were painted, the artist, etc.

Also, be sure to check out the comment thread for a discussion of the whole “what’s up with all the blue” question — my inkling was about Prussian Blue and other Western colour-fads, too.

American Theatre Archive Project (ATAP) NYC Team Wants You!

Want to be part of a troupe of New York City archivists and librarians with a passion for theatre?

Do you have a knowledge of basic archival principles, the ability to survey collections, some familiarity with theater terminology; are you able to attend at least half of our monthly meetings the first Monday of each month at the New Amsterdam Theatre?  Then ATAP is an organization where your talents will truly make a difference.

Founded in 2009, the American Theatre Archive Project supports theatre makers in archiving records of their work for the benefit of artists, scholars, patrons, and the public.

An initiative of the American Society for Theatre Research (ASTR), ATAP is a nationwide network of archivists, dramaturgs and scholars dedicated to preserving the legacy of the American theatre.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Lucille Lortel Foundation, ATAP teams (usually an archivist and documentarian) have completed surveys and developed plans for the archives of Roundabout Theatre, Atlantic Theater Company, Cherry Lane Theater, and New York Theatre Workshop (with more to come).

Our Goals

  • To preserve records of current theatrical process and product for future generations.
  • To employ theatre legacy to develop theatres’ fiscal health and support new work.
  • To promote a better understanding of theatre as a vital element of cultural history.
  • To encourage scholarly research in contemporary American theatre.
  • To increase funding for establishing and maintaining theatre archives.
  • To support collaborations among theatre archivists, practitioners, and scholars.

ATAP holds training sessions and has developed a manual and brochure for theater companies.

Visual Resources Intern– The Jewish Museum

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Jewish Museum’s Visual Resource Archive consists of photographic materials depicting permanent collections objects, past exhibition installations, and themes relating to Jewish history and culture.

Under the supervision of the Visual Resources Coordinator, the Visual Resources Intern will be responsible for researching and cataloging physical photographic collateral including glass plate negatives, 35 mm slides, and 4×5 transparencies. The successful candidate will have film handling experience and will be familiar with collections databases. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to pursue a career in the visual resources fields and to observe the inner workings of a museum visual resources collection. The internship will also provide experience and hands-on training working with the most commonly used museum collections software, The Museum System (TMS).

The intern will receive a museum identification card that allows for free admission to other museums and various discounts.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Identify, research, and store photographic materials in the Visual Resources Archive
 Transcribe information associated with the images
 Label archival envelopes for the permanent storage of analog photographic materials
 Use TMS to find information about artwork depicted in images
 Entering data and attaching images to records in TMS may be required

REQUIREMENTS:

 At least 3 years coursework toward Bachelor’s Degree in Art History or Photography
 Experience handling delicate materials such as negative and transparencies
 Experience working with analog photographic materials and scanners
 Strong attention to detail

Visual Resources Curator– Lamar Dodd School of Art, University of Georgia

The Lamar Dodd School of Art seeks a curator of visual resources who possesses a solid knowledge of technology and an acute interest in providing new proactive services and support to faculty and students. This position reports to the Director of the School of Art. The curator will be responsible for developing, managing, and delivering visual resources, and for managing and overseeing additional digital teaching materials. Essential functions of the Visual Resources Curator include administration of the collection and training student staff. The successful candidate will work within the Lamar Dodd School of Art with a community of over 900 undergraduate students in Studio, Art History, and Art Education, 100 art history undergraduate majors and minors, 100 graduate students, and more than 45 tenured faculty in these three disciplines.

It is anticipated that the future projects for this increasingly dynamic position will require multiple skills, including the ability to manage complex, multi-year projects, to work in close collaboration with the faculty, administration, and staff of the Lamar Dodd School of Art, and to build relationships with the UGA. Libraries and with faculty and students across campus who may be investigating the visual arts. Projects may include digitizing the Lamar Dodd School of Art’s significant historic art slide collections, and collaborating with the UGA Libraries to develop print and digital resources and services on site in the Lamar Dodd School of Art. This challenging and rewarding opportunity requires both creative flexibility and independent individual initiative.

Requirements:

M.A. or B.A. in art
 history, architecture, visual studies
 or a related field. Substantial experience working with visual resources collections with knowledge of the issues around the creation, maintenance, and access of a visual resources collection, including familiarity with standards for visual materials. Experience working with digital imaging technologies and library management. Reading knowledge of multiple languages, ideally including one Romance language and German. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and ability to work in a collaborative setting. Strong organizational and management skills, including the ability to initiate, track, and manage complex, multi-year projects successfully.

ARLIS/NA Canada Call For Proposals: Book Chapters on Art Libraries in Canada

Attention all Canadian art-librarian hopefuls! Here’s a great project to be involved in, if you have worked at, or are interested in, one of the many art libraries our country has to offer. If you’d like to get published, do an interesting research project, and support the efforts of Canadian ARLIS members, take a look.

The first edition of the History of Art Librarianship in Canada: Essay in the History of Art Librarianship in Canada came out in 2006; the second edition would ideally come out in 2015, and needs to be expanded to include more libraries as well as recent developments. Some discussion about the project, and a short list of art libraries to be profiled, is in the 2013 Annual Report.

There are two deadlines for proposals: April 25th (if you’d like to have your proposal discussed in Washington next month), and May 30th (the extended deadline). I encourage you to send a query before April 25th, even if you can’t complete a full proposal by that day.

This initial project was generously sponsored and funded by the National Gallery of Canada Library and

Archives and first made available online in 2006. We would like to continue this tradition of excellence by

publishing a second edition that will include additional essays on libraries, institutions and related resource centres not profiled in the original publication.

 

We have compiled a list of libraries that could be included, but realize that logistically some may not be able to commit to a full research project of this nature at present. So the committee is eager to hear from you directly and encourages you to submit proposals for the second edition of the History of Art Libraries in Canada. Our hope is that your input will help us build the structure for this anthology of library histories.

It is understandable that histories will vary in length and include diverse types of documentation, so we

encourage any potential contributors to apply, even if primary supporting sources for your library’s story

would be oral histories, memoirs, or other unpublished ephemeral information sources. As was the case with the first edition, the History of Art Libraries in Canada vol.2 will profile the establishment and evolution of collections, spaces, visual and information literacy services, as well as the profession of art librarianship in Canada.

 

The working committee is eager to profile as many libraries as possible, so we encourage you to submit

a proposal if you are capable of researching, documenting, and writing an essay within roughly the next year. Although an official publication date has not been finalized, we hope to have a clear picture of the libraries to be included by Spring 2014 and begin compiling and editing the publication by 2015.

  • Oversee image processing (scanning of digital material, creation of metadata, and uploading of images and metadata to our local database).
  • Assist with ongoing digital image conversion projects; familiarizing faculty with MDID2, ARTstor, and other image resources.
  • Assist with inquires regarding scanning, Photoshop, PowerPoint and other VR related software and equipment as needed.
  • Troubleshoot image databases and working with Library Systems staff and campus IT to resolve technical issues.

The University of Oregon Libraries seeks a knowledgeable, creative, and user-oriented colleague for the position of Art and Architecture Librarian.  This position provides the opportunity to participate in a wide range of services and professional responsibilities in a dynamic environment.

The Architecture and Allied Arts (A&AA) Library’s collections primarily support the diverse academic programs associated with the School of Architecture and Allied Arts.  The library’s holdings are complemented by collections of art and architecture titles in Knight Library and the UO Portland Library and Learning Commons.  Important collections of architectural archives and drawings are housed in the UO Libraries’ Special Collections & University Archives.  In addition to its 86,000 volumes, the A&AA Library holds unique collections of rare books, architectural drawings and models, and artists’ books.  The A&AA Library has 4.0 FTE staff members, and several student assistants.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Art and Architecture Librarian has responsibility for developing collections and services to support scholarly users of information, serving as the primary liaison with the Department of Art, the Department of the History of Art and Architecture, and the Arts and Administration, Product Design, and Digital Arts programs.  This position provides reference and research consultation, collection development, and instructional and outreach services in art history, architecture, fine arts, and related disciplines.  Service on library and campus committees is expected.  Other related duties and projects will be assigned.  Library faculty members are also encouraged to be professionally active through involvement in regional and national associations, research, or publication.  This position is located in the A&AA Library, and reports to the head of that department.

Qualifications:

Ability to write clearly and concisely is required. Must have some experience with collection management systems or online library catalogues.
Desirable Requirements Knowledge of cataloguing rules (AACR2, DACS), controlled vocabularies, and authority control is highly desirable. Experience with Archivists’ Toolkit is desirable. Background in art and or architecture, cultural history is desired. Ability to read architectural plans will be an asset. Some knowledge of XML is desired.
