2018 Lois Swan Jones Professional Development Award Announcement

The ARLIS/NA Texas-Mexico Chapter is pleased to announce the 2018 Lois Swan Jones Professional Development Award, which supports the participation of an ARLIS/NA Texas-Mexico chapter member at the ARLIS/NA 46th annual conference to be held in New York City from February 25-March 1, 2018.

This year, the $750 award will be awarded to help defray the costs of attending the conference – students and professionals are both encouraged to apply! The award committee urges everyone with interest and need to apply, especially first-time conference attendees, but previous recipients are eligible as well.

The deadline for applications is Wednesday, November 22, 2017.

Eligibility:

  • Applicant must be a member in good standing of ARLIS/NA. This year’s award will also include one year of membership in the ARLIS Texas-Mexico chapter, required for eligibility.
  • Applicants who are fully funded to attend the conference through their institution of employment or education are not eligible.
  • Applicant may live outside of Texas or Mexico.
  • Applicant is eligible even if the member has previously received the award. The committee shall consider the merits of the individual application independent of past decisions.

Application Procedure:

  • Applicant should submit a letter of application and curriculum vitae to the award committee chair via email (Helen Lueders at hlueders@mfah.org). The letter must include a statement of qualification explaining eligibility and interest, the amount of expected institutional funding (if any) for conference attendance, and proposed conference program involvement.
  • Deadline for 2018 Award submissions is November 22, 2017. The award this year is $750.00

Call for Proposals: Southeast Annual Conference in Savannah, GA – DUE 9/15

The Southeast Chapter of ARLIS/NA is accepting proposals for presentations and lightning rounds for the 2017 Annual Conference, which will be held in Savannah Georgia from November 15-17. The lightning rounds are particularly great opportunities for students and young professionals to present their work and gain valuable conference experience. 

Lightning Round Proposals

Lightning rounds are meant as a way to share a topic or innovative idea in a fast and concise yet comprehensive visual presentation. Each round will follow the PechaKucha Lightning Talk format of no more than 20 slides, timed at 20 seconds apiece. Topics should reflect an area of interest within art libraries, such as: assessment, collections, digital scholarship, instruction, outreach, or spaces.

Eligibility :
Currently enrolled students in a MLIS, Museum Studies, Fine Arts, Design Arts, ArtHistory, or related graduate program
New professionals in one of the aforementioned fields (under 5 years post-degree)
Proposals should contain a title and short description of the presentation you would give, as well as your name, phone number, email address, institutional affiliation (if any), and whether you are designated as a student or young professional.

Please submit proposals for moderated PechaKucha Lightning Round presentations to programplanningcommittee@gmail.com by September 15, 2017.

Demystifying the CFP: join the #ARLIS2018 conference proposal webinar this Monday (4/17)!

Curious about the ARLIS/NA CFP process and looking for guidance?

Coming up Monday, April 17 at 1:00PM CDT / 2:00pm EDT: Demystifying the CFP: How to Propose a Conference Session. Lindsay King and Dan Lipcan, Program Co-Chairs for the ARLIS/NA 2018 conference to be held in New York City from February 25-March 1, will host this webinar to discuss the proposal process and answer any questions you might have about how the program will be crafted.

Topics to be addressed will include the submission form, proposal types, the blind peer review process, the Program Committee’s approach to how submissions will be judged, and the program planning timeline. There will be plenty of time for questions.

Reflections from a First Time Attendee: 3 highlights from ARLIS/NA 2017

I’m Anna Van Someren, one of the over 70 first-timers at this year’s ARLIS/NA conference in New Orleans. My path toward art librarianship has been long and loopy. On the way, I’ve passed through art school, advertising, and teaching. While managing digital media projects at MIT, I became interested in library and information studies and decided to get my MLIS from Simmons College, with a concentration in Cultural Heritage Informatics. I’ll graduate this May! Right now I’m working on an arts inventory project at the Boston Public Library and a metadata internship at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Dare I specialize – should I even go to ARLIS? (Yes!)

I’ve heard bad things about the job market, and a specialized library job is even harder to find. Maybe I should just hope for a full-time job anywhere! But my dream job is to work as an art librarian. The people I’ve met through my local chapter, ARLIS New England, have been so kind, encouraging and generous with their time. And taking the Art Documentation class taught by the celebrated (and approachable, funny, inspiring) Ann Whiteside whipped my humble wish into a fevered frenzy. Working with art students, finding resources to inspire them!, I thought.  Collaborating with art professors, following their research, finding what they need before they even know it!, I trembled. Purchasing art books! … So I did it. I attended my first ARLIS/NA conference. And I am so glad that I did.

Highlight #1: The ArLiSNAP Career Development Workshop

I’ve been to things like this before – you get someone to glance at your resume, you maybe get an established professional to give you some vague advice while you stare at them, wondering desperately: How do I get to where YOU are? and What comes first, the crazy good haircut or the crazy good job?  But this one was different. It was three hours of creative, engaging, productive fun!

Ashleigh Coren took us through a three-part writing activity that to our pleasure and surprise, resulted in some pretty decent personal statements. Mine still needs some work, but I’m excited to use it on LinkedIn, in interviews, and pretty much everywhere. Then Breanne Crumpton moderated a great Q&A session with a panel of three well-established professionals: Kim Loconto, Kristina Keogh and Heather Slania. Here’s a pdf document summarizing their advice on cover letters, resumes and interviewing in our field. My question was “How do you address a gap in your resume due to staying home a year with your new baby?” The panelists agreed that employers notice such gaps, and suggested mentioning it briefly in the cover letter narrative. They also recommended that parents and caregivers attend the ALPACA meeting later in the day (see my highlight #2 below).

After fielding our questions, the panelists gave us personalized resume advice. We broke into small groups and took turns sharing our resumes and asking questions. This was especially valuable to me, as I’m moving from academia into librarianship; the expectations can really vary in different fields. I feel much more confident about my resume – or I will, as soon as I finish implementing all the new ideas!

  

Highlight #2: Art Librarian Parents and Caregivers SIG (ALPACA)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this group, but liked the idea of meeting and hearing from other working parents in the field. The ideas generated in the discussion were exciting: research into federal and state family leave laws, for example. I had to leave early for another event, but this meeting had a deep impact on me later in the day.

I was talking with a friend who had also attended the ALPACA meeting. We talked about one of ALPACA’s main concerns: “work life balance”. My friend has a mentor who had once worked with her to unpack this idea of balance – which can sometimes feel like pressure to achieve the impossible. Does successful “balance” mean giving exactly half of your attention to your job and the other half to the rest of your life (your family, personal health, social life, and other activities)? In real life, that would be impossible on almost any given day! This mentor encouraged my friend to think about the effort of balancing one’s life over the long term. For a span of time, work may require more of your attention, and at another time in your life, circumstances may cause a shift in the direction of your energy. I was relieved to realize that maybe balance doesn’t have to mean two equal halves. Maybe we can find balance through flexibility, or in the slow swinging movement of our attention over many years.

Highlight #3: ArLiSNAP meeting

I was excited to attend this meeting. As you know if you’re reading this post, ArLiSNAP stands for Art Library Students and New ARLIS Professionals – and I’m trying to transition from student to professional. Perfect! Like every other ARLIS meeting I’ve attended, the vibe was welcoming and buoyant. I scribbled notes as fast as I could – “the virtual conference is online at the learning portal!” – “check out VRA job digest, VRA FB and twitter!” – “check out ArLiSNAP blog!” – “volunteer to write blog posts!”

  

Of course there were many other highlights in my conference experience, including sessions that gave me an inside look at the work art librarians do. I also had a beautiful walk down Magazine Street, saw a gorgeous sunset over the water, and ate delicious meals with dear friends. Turns out I love New Orleans!

Next year, NYC!

Please join ArLiSNAP for our three upcoming events during the annual conference. On Monday, February 6, from 8-12, the ArLiSNAP Career Development Workshop will provide meaningful discussions for students and new professionals looking to break into the field of art librarianship.

The ArLiSNAP annual meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 7 at 8 am, highlighting our goals and activities from last year and discussing our plans for the upcoming year.

Also, join ArLiSNAP for our annual ArLiSNAP Night Out on Tuesday, February 7, starting at 7:30 p.m. The Night Out is an informal networking event for students and new professionals. This year we are meeting at Barcadia, a few blocks from the Hilton New Orleans Riverside, for a little side of Tuesday night trivia with our networking. Drop in for a few minutes or stay all night!

The ARLIS/NA Texas-Mexico Chapter is pleased to announce the 2017 Lois Swan Jones Professional Development Award. This $500 award encourages active involvement of a member of the Texas-Mexico Chapter in the ARLIS/NA 45th Annual Conference held in New Orleans, February 5-9, 2017. 

The award honors the memory of Lois Swan Jones, Professor Emerita of art history at the University of North Texas, by underwriting participation of members of the Texas-Mexico Chapter at the ARLIS/NA annual meeting.

The award committee urges everyone with interest and need to apply, especially first-time conference attendees. To meet the primary requirement, applicants must lack full institutional funding. Previous winners are eligible. Applicant must be a member in good standing of both ARLIS/NA and ARLIS/Texas-Mexico.

Two major deadlines for the 2017 ARLIS/NA Conference in New Orleans are coming up within the next week!

Travel awards:

Applications for travel awards, three of which are specifically allocated for student travel! All travel award applications are due Monday, October 31, and current membership in ARLIS/NA is only required for one of the student awards. New Voices in the Profession:

The New Voices in the Profession session of the ARLIS/NA annual conference is always a great opportunity for students and new professionals to present their work and get some conference experience while engaging with the larger ARLIS/NA community. The deadline to submit a proposal for the 2017 conference in New Orleans is this Friday, October 28!

Paper proposals for the New Voices in the Profession session at the 2017 ARLIS/NA conference in New Orleans are now being accepted!

New Voices in the Profession showcases exceptional academic work by students and new professionals (under 5 years post MLS). Paper topics should relate strongly to Art Librarianship, but could also pertain to digital library projects, visual resources, archives, library instruction, reference and the changing nature of libraries, among other topics. Paper topics that relate to the conference theme of collaboration and diversity, “Arts du Monde,” will be given special consideration.

Chapter Opportunity: Get involved with ARLIS/NA-Southeast!

The Southeast Chapter of ARLIS/NA will host the annual conference in New Orleans February 5-9, 2017, so opportunities to get involved are already developing and will continue to develop in the coming months.

The ARLIS/NA-SE Chapter serves professionals (and students!) who reside in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. If you live in any of these places, check out the chapter website and see how you can get involved. Here are some current opportunities to highlight:

  • The chapter is hosting its own annual conference November 16-18 in Sarasota, FL, at the Center for Asian Art at the Ringling Museum of Art. More information can be found on the conference website.
  • Chapter Vice-President Kimberly Windham encourages ARLIS/NA-SE members who are located in Florida to apply to serve on the Program Planning Committee for the Sarasota conference. Serving on this committee is a great chance to network and build valuable skills! Interested members may submit a letter of interest to her at kimberly(dot)windham(at)famu(dot)edu
  • The Southeast Chapter also continually runs an informal mentoring program for chapter members. Whether you are a student or new professional, mentoring programs can be very helpful as you get started in your career. More information can be found here and the program comes highly recommended!

We’ll discuss our experiences searching for and finding jobs, and we encourage you to discuss yours as well. There are still spots in the workshop, and we hope that you’ll come!

Volunteer photographers are invited to capture ARLIS/NA members’ legendary style for the Librarian Wardrobe blog —http://librarianwardrobe.com. For inspiration, here are the pics from last year’s conference in Fort Worth It’s wonderful that Librarian Wardrobe has agreed to partner with ARLIS/NA again for the conference in Seattle.

In order to volunteer be you should be…
* An information professional or LIS student
* Willing to share a photo and short bio of yourself on LW
* Able to collect at least 3-5 photos during the conference
* Comfortable engaging with fellow conference-goers. Photos must be taken with consent (no candid pics) and include the photographed subject’s position/job title, type of library, and location.
