Highline College is looking for a part-time reference librarian to work 20-25 hours per week beginning Fall Quarter 2021. The contract period for Fall Quarter begins September 21, 2021. Depending on experience and availability, additional days may be scheduled prior to September 21, 2021 for training.

Part-time librarians are an important part of the Highline College Library reference department, allowing us to provide reference services during all operating hours including covering for conference attendance and other absences. Part-time Librarians are also fully integrated into department, library, and campus environment.

The Reference Librarians, as members of the Reference Department, report to the Dean of Instructional Resources. The Reference Department team provides information literacy instruction, reference and research services, collection development, and integration/implementation of electronic information resources. These services are provided to all members of the College community, regardless of whether they are on campus or at remote locations.

The Reference Department accomplishes its work through a collaborative process. Each tenured faculty librarian has assigned areas of strategic leadership and has the primary responsibility for coordinating projects and activities within those assigned areas. All librarians, full and part-time, participate in the planning, delivery and assessment of all the services of the department. The Reference Services librarian schedules the librarians for reference desk shifts and serves as a contact person for the part-time librarians.

This position is for a part-time Reference Librarian working 20 hours per week, including early morning, evenings and weekends.

Essential Tasks

Ability to:

  • Provide direct research and reference assistance to library users.
  • Take an active role in developing and delivering information literacy instruction, which includes developing methodology and assessment, consulting and collaborating with other faculty for the purpose of integrating information literacy instruction into subject curricula, and providing instruction for students, faculty and staff.
  • Assist with library collection development which includes working with faculty and staff, conducting assessments, and selecting and weeding materials within assigned discipline areas.
  • Assist faculty in research projects, curriculum development and classroom assignments.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of the library’s web pages and LibGuides.
  • Participate in ongoing work on special projects within the reference department.
  • Evaluate services and develop recommendations for enhancements of service delivery.

Qualifications

MINIMUM:
Master of Library Science or equivalent from an ALA accredited program.

DESIRED:
Academic library experience.

CONDITIONS of EMPLOYMENT:
Flexibility in scheduling, must be able to work daytime, evening, weekend and short-notice substitute hours.
