Job Opportunity: Temporary Associate Cataloguer / Department Assistant, Sotheby’s


Work with department heads and specialists to contribute to the success of the European Ceramics and Furniture departments in New York. The focus will be on assisting specialists and sale administrators, with organising, cataloguing and researching items consigned for sale, assisting with all aspects of developing and producing an auction catalogue, developing an understanding of the auction process, and developing expertise.



  • Assisting with all aspects of research and preparation of the catalogue. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
    • Assisting with physical cataloguing and preparation of works for photography
    • Assist in researching and writing catalogue notes for a large variety of works of different genres, periods, media, and price points
    • Assisting with image research for comparable images used in the catalogue design
    • Liaising with catalogue production and designers in editing the layout of the catalogue
    • Proofreading and providing ad hoc support in the final stages of catalogue deadline
  • Liaising with internal support staff including administrators, registrars, art handlers, catalogue production, press, and marketing in assisting with the planning and execution of all logistical aspects of the sale;
  • During the exhibition and sale weeks, an associate cataloguer is expected to be an available resource for both New York-based and international colleagues, as well as a knowledgeable source of information on all aspects of the works in our sale


  • Create and update property information in SAP
  • Assisting with general department support, including answering phones
  • Assist in delivery of property to/from offsite locations for restoration, authenticity, etc.
  • Assisting in listing and tagging property for sale at offsite locations
  • Assist clients with walk-in inquiries and release of property
  • Assist experts in inputting and organizing information for evaluations and appraisals
  • Provide general department assistance including handling general correspondence, phone calls, department record center filing, audit requests, phone bidding


  • Experience in the decorative art world is preferred, with a demonstrated interest in antique ceramics and / or furniture
  • Excellent writing and organizational skills
  • Team player with strong communication skills
  • Professional and discrete client service skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines and multi-task
  • Ability to work collaboratively on large projects while be confident and comfortable taking initiative and working on one’s own
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Occasional weekend work required
