The University of New Mexico College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences (CUL&LS) seeks a collaborative, service-oriented, and innovative Humanities Librarian to support a dynamic library system with a strong outreach and instruction program. This is a full-time, 12-month tenure track faculty position. The desired start date is Summer or Fall 2019. The annual salary is negotiable based on qualifications and includes full benefits.

Position Description

As part of Learning & Outreach Services in the University Libraries, the Humanities Librarian will:

  • Serve as the Libraries’ specialist for the humanities, focusing on instruction, research assistance, and collection development for departments including History, Classical Studies, American Studies, Philosophy, Religion, and the Honors College;
  • Proactively build relationships and partnerships with students, faculty, and staff in the undergraduate and graduate humanities programs;
  • Both collaboratively and independently design, implement, and assess library instructional services, including face-to-face, hybrid, and online learning opportunities, instruction sessions and workshops, and other approaches with specific attention to the methodologies used by humanities scholars;
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with UL&LS colleagues, employing communication, organizational, analytic, and problem-solving skills;
  • Work with campus partners and library colleagues to design, implement, and assesses library instruction and outreach services and activities;
  • Work collaboratively to implement approaches, services, systems, and strategies to engage with scholars during all phases of the research process: research design, discovery, analysis, and publication;
  • Keep current with emerging information and instructional technologies, facilitating new uses of humanities research, e-scholarship, and digital tools;
  • Work to meet scholarship and service requirements for promotion and tenure;
  • Participate in faculty governance as detailed in the UNM Faculty Handbook.
  • Working some evenings and weekends is required.

Education and Experience

Minimum Requirements:

  • An earned master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library/information sciences program or equivalent OR a terminal degree in a humanities or related field by the start date.
  • Two years’ experience working in a library in the past five years by start date.

Preferred (Desired) Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in a Humanities field;
  • Familiarity with historical research methods;
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in conducting outreach and engagement efforts with students, faculty, and campus collaborators to support research and instructional endeavors;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with information literacy concepts and trends (e.g., the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy);
  • Experience with face-to-face and online instruction, including the design of instructional materials, activities, and curricula as well as presentation techniques and skills;
  • Experience or demonstrated knowledge of best practices in managing and evaluating subject-specific collections;
  • Demonstrated proficiency with contemporary and emerging information technologies such as web authoring tools and technologies, social media, digital learning objects, screencasting, and/or LibApps;
  • Knowledge of scholarly communication issues and trends within the humanities;
  • Experience with or knowledge of the digital humanities;
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish or an Indigenous language of the Southwestern U.S.;
  • Reading knowledge of a language other than English;
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills as well as strong service orientation;
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive educational environment and workplace and ability to work with broadly diverse communities;
  • Demonstrated willingness to respond to new opportunities with initiative, creative energy, and leadership;
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success as well as working with broadly diverse communities.

Primary Duties

  • Serve as primary liaison and actively develop professional relationships with faculty, students, and staff in History, Philosophy, Religion, Classical Studies, American Studies, and the Honors College;
  • Provide instruction in research and information literacy in a variety of settings;
  • Contribute to library-wide collection development activities including developing and managing electronic, multimedia, and print collections in the relevant disciplines to support the research and teaching needs of the UNM community;
  • Engage in library outreach activities to assigned liaison areas and to the university community;
  • Provide research consultations to individuals or groups as requested;
  • Work collaboratively with the UL&LS Research Data Services program to provide assistance to faculty and students with their data management needs;
  • Assist faculty engaged in digital scholarship projects by collaborating with Digital Initiatives and Scholarly Communication (DISC);
  • Participate in UL&LS faculty governance and in library management as required.
  • Meet scholarship and service requirements for promotion and tenure as detailed in the UNM Faculty Handbook;
  • Contribute to CUL&LS initiatives that further UNM’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
