Library Assistant
- Provides public service and performs a variety of duties related to the operation of the circulation desk
- Works with the integrated library system (Millennium by Innovative Interfaces, Inc) and performs routine clerical work as assigned
- Provides circulation, ready-reference and reserve services to library patrons at assigned service points. Works on special projects as assigned
- Checks materials in and out
- Registers borrowers and updates borrowers’ records
- Calculates and receives fines and fees
- Carries out and explains circulation policies and procedures to patrons
- Answers telephones and routes calls if necessary
- Assists patrons with access to reserve materials
- Provides basic ready-reference services in person and by telephone
- Opens and closes the library on weekends and evenings
- Works on special projects as assigned. Includes: bar coding library materials, shifting library collections and moving shelves, book repair, and moving light furniture
- Demonstrates excellent attention to detail when working on library tasks
- Demonstrates familiarity with library technology, such as online catalogs, wikis, blogs, databases, etc.
- Troubleshoots basic problems with library equipment, including computers (Mac and PC), scanners, copiers, and printers
- Assists patrons with basic computer functions and programs including Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Preview, and Photoshop
- Ad hoc projects such as shelving, inventory, and other general library duties as assigned
- Maintains knowledge of current practices in library and information technologies and educational trends, particularly in relation to Circulation and Public Service in libraries
- Cooperates in a teamwork fashion with all coworkers and provides excellent customer service to all library patrons
- Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication skills
Requirements:
- Previous customer service experience required
- Previous library experience and/or completion or current enrollment in a library technician certificate program is preferred
- Excellent knowledge with Mac and PC computers required
- Experience with troubleshooting basic technical problems strongly desired
- Required to work at least one closing shift and/or one weekend shift
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Friendly, outgoing, team player is a must
This position works 40 hours per week during Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. This position works 37.5 weeks per year.
