The John de Lancie Library is located in the Milton L. Rock Resource Center at Curtis. The library holds more than eighty thousand music scores, books, and recordings for study and performance. In addition, the library collects and archives manuscripts, gifts of music, and memorabilia of Curtis and people associated with it. The Archives, a unit of the library, houses more than 150,000 documents and media related to the history of Curtis, its students and faculty, and related materials.

Essential Functions:

The position of Library Intern, reporting to the Assistant Librarian, will have the opportunity to experience all aspects of the library including cataloging in RDA, digitization, and circulation and reference services. The intern will follow cataloging projects from OCLC searching to RDA copy or original cataloging, then on to technical processing and shelving.

Responsibilities include:

  • Searching records in OCLC
  • Copy and original cataloging using RDA
  • Working with the media librarian on digitization and the digital repository
  • Collaborating with librarians on bibliographic instruction
  • Performing additional library-related tasks such as shelving, accessioning, and special projects as assigned
  • Working occasional circulation/reference desk shifts as needed

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’ s degree in a music-related field
  • Enrolled in a Library Science master’s program or interest learning about the field
  • Experience with Microsoft software, including Word and Excel

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to read music and demonstrated knowledge of classical music
  • Outstanding analytical and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of cataloging (MARC, RDA and/or AARC2), preferred, and a willingness to learn new skills
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to thrive as a member of a team
  • Curiosity for and willingness to learn new and emerging technology and adapt to rapidly changing environments

Working Conditions/Physical Demands:

Routine for office environment. The employee will be required to perform the essential functions of the job.
