Job Posting: Library Assistant II, The Getty, Los Angeles, CA

Works under regular supervision on assignments of moderate complexity. Provides library support services to staff and Special Collections reading room users by retrieving materials from vaults and assisting with handling.  Retrieves and shelves Special Collections materials; works with colleagues to maintain storage vaults; conducts inventories of Special Collections material; monitors and maintains Special Collections Reading Room and Seminar Rooms. Uses online library system to create, maintain and update holdings and item records; Processes some Special Collections materials by preparing labels, providing housing and entering information into systems. Responds to routine queries from staff and readers; refers more complex queries to reference librarians and curators as appropriate. Participates in special projects as assigned.

Major Job Responsibilities:
  • Daily paging and reshelving a high volume of material
  • Ability to lift boxes and push book trucks up to 40 pounds
  • Assists and resolves moderately complex problems for staff and library users
  • Learns and uses various library software applications to execute moderately complex transactions to track materials, describe collections, manage library collections, and document activities
  • May oversee temporary staff or work-study students
  • Participates in special projects as assigned
  • May assist with scanning material for reference requests
  • Bachelor’s degree in art history or related discipline
  • 2-3 years experience in library setting
  • Reading knowledge in at least one foreign language preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to learn library-specific software applications
  • Ability to lift boxes and push book trucks up to 40 pounds
  • Experience with industry-standard software suites as appropriate to assigned duties
  • May require familiarity laws and standards as appropriate to assigned duties
  • Experience with bibliographic databases and library-specific software applications preferred
  • Ability to handle rare and unique materials with care
