Job Posting: Associate Cataloger – Watches and Clocks, Sotheby’s, NYC

Working as part of the Watches & Clocks Department, the Cataloguer will work closely with the New York team in cataloguing and coordinating the sales.

  • Assisting with the day to day running of the sale process, with an emphasis on researching and cataloguing (including provenance, literature and exhibition information) Watches to the highest standard.
  • Involvement in catalogue production, including paste-ups and layouts
  • Coordinating the photography of objects and ensuring it is completed in a timely manner, color-proofing of catalogue images and managing the Photographer and his schedule
  • Providing a comprehensive level of service to Sotheby’s clients. This includes responding to day to day client queries and maintaining client contact
  • Assisting in evaluating works for auction and appraisal purposes, helping to respond to phone and written estimate requests
  • Assist in creating valuations on the Valuations system: uploading hand-written notes, photographs, and pricing from client visits; liaising with Valuations department through the process from drafting to final copy
  • Writing condition reports
  • Liaising with Press and Marketing to provide images using Web Native for promotional materials
  • Managing the communication with watch manufacturers and archival departments, as well as external consultants
  • Helping to plan and organize exhibition of pieces for auction – coordination with repairers, etc.
  • Selling works of art on the phone (telephone bidding) or on the exhibition floor.
  • Opportunities to assist with business getting and traveling on client visits, negotiating consignments
  • General department support including answering phones and meeting walk-in clients
  • Assisting the International Team when required.
  • Strong interest in Watches
  • Auction house experience is preferred
  • Strong attention to detail

  • Strong multi-tasker and team player
  • Excellent organizational skills
