Job Posting: Reference/Technical Associate, Lilly Library, Indiana University, IN

Job Summary: Provides reference and research assistance to Lilly Library (the Rare Books and Manuscripts Library of the Indiana University Library system) patrons in person, by telephone and fax, and by regular and electronic mail; and ensures proper use and security of special collection items by patrons. Conducts tours for visitors; and assists exhibition coordinator with public exhibitions in the Lilly Library display areas and the publicity for those exhibitions. Schedules rooms and events for the Lilly Library; and compiles usage statistics.

REQUIRED: Two years of college level coursework and one year of reference library experience.

Bibliographic or better knowledge of Latin, French, German, Spanish, or Italian; and knowledge of library procedures and resources. Ability to process complex, detailed work with accuracy; strong organizational skills; demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making abilities; and ability to pay attention to detail and follow established guidelines. Computer experience including email, internet applications, on-line / database searching, and working knowledge of word processing/database/spreadsheet software. Good interpersonal, oral and written communications skills.

Must be able to climb flights of stairs, often while carrying collection materials, lift books and boxes (averaging 25-50 lbs.), bend and stretch to retrieve material, maneuver cumbersome and awkward items (such as posters, maps and architectural plans) up and down stairs, and move furniture for special events. Close concentration is also required to read fine print, card catalogs, and computer screens, which may cause visual strain.

Preferred: Bachelor’s degree; six months of rare books/special collections experience; public speaking and editorial experience.
