The Richard Avedon Foundation, a non-profit artist’s foundation, is seeking an archivist. The Foundation maintains and protects Richard Avedon’s photographs, negatives and papers and administers his copyrights worldwide. The archivist will manage the Foundation’s rich archive in accordance with its mission and mandate set forth by Richard Avedon, in order to extend and promote his legacy.
The Foundation seeks someone committed to making the archive available to researchers and students, maintaining and managing the Foundation’s renowned internship program, and who has the ability to coordinate complex projects and coordinate preservation work.
The duties of the archivist, who will need to quickly gain an understanding of the Avedon archives, include, but are not limited to, the following: prioritizing the organization of the archive; overseeing the rehousing and scanning of un-archived material; developing a polished finding aid; locating material for various Foundation projects and publications; the continuation of the archiving of Avedon studio documents, letters, video and film, and moving them to long-term climate-controlled storage; making archive acquisitions; vetting and organizing digital archive material; encouraging access to the archives by researchers, authors, and art historians.
Successful candidates will possess an in-depth knowledge of: archival principles and practices with an emphasis on photographic archives, digital imaging and management of electronic collections, Adobe Photoshop and other image editing software and scanners, preservation and conservation standards for archival and photographic collections.
A BA in a relevant field; at least 5 years archives experience, preferably in an art or photography setting; strong understanding of current technologies applicable to archives; excellent planning and organizational skills; proficiency in FileMaker and old typewriters.
