About the Visual Resources Center:
The mission of the Visual Resources Center is to support the Department of Art History and the University of Chicago Division of the Humanities through the expert provision and development of high-quality visual resources for the study and teaching of Art History and the Humanities. The Visual Resources Center seeks a detail-­‐oriented, energetic individual committed to user-centered services to perform the assigned duties as the Assistant Director, Visual Resources Center.

Job Summary:
Provides professional, relevant, and effective outreach and support for scholarship to faculty, students, and other members of the University community. Works closely with faculty and students to integrate digital images and relevant technologies into the research and pedagogical activities of the Art History Department and Humanities Division. Collaborates effectively with the Associate Director to develop and implement policies and workflows and to assist in all aspects of the daily operation and development of the Visual Resources Center. Catalogs, develops, maintains, and administers digital collections. Oversees the work of part-time students and other temporary employees.

Creates authority-based, original image catalog records in relation database, with a user-oriented perspective. Implements and maintains metadata and content standards in image catalog and image archive. Performs quality-control for all records in multiple image databases. Leads periodic meetings of part-time cataloging staff.

Serves as primary point of contact for al patrons of the Visual Resources Center. Develops and delivers specialized training for digital media and related technology to faculty, students, and staff, in groups and individually. Creates course-specific and general classroom instruction sessions, online tutorials, and reference guides using a variety of media. Collaborates with Library and other University staff on campus-wide instruction sessions related to visual literacy and discovery of visual materials. Promotes awareness of the Visual Resources Center services, projects, and resources via social media outlets and Center website.

Maintains digital archive and digital access points in collaboration with Associate Director. Establishes and implements effective workflows to verify, transfer, deliver, and archive media and corresponding metadata. Maintains, troubleshoots, and performs quality-control, including color fidelity testing, for digital files, delivery systems, and imaging technology. Keeps accurate administrative records. Develops appropriate metadata display templates. Participates in an ongoing dialogue with patrons to maintain high usability standards for all VRC collections.

Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, Art History, or the Arts awarded no later than June 2013 required.

A minimum of two years of work experience preferred.
A minimum of one year of related work experience preferred.
Experience in collections of digital images in an academic, museum, library, or analogous work environment preferred.
Digital archiving experience preferred.

Working or educational knowledge of visual image cataloging procedures and practices required.
Working or educational knowledge of library discovery systems such as ARTstor, LUNA, and faceted search engines required.
Working or educational knowledge of the VRA Core 4 metadata schema, national cataloging standards, and controlled vocabularies required.
Working or educational knowledge of digitization best practices required. Demonstration of strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills with excellent attention to detail and a high level of accuracy required.
Ability to take initiative, solve problems, and prioritize work effectively required.
Excellent interpersonal skills and oral and written communication skills required.
Demonstrated ability to work well both independently and collaboratively with colleagues, faculty, and staff in a rapidly changing and dynamic environment required.
Ability to operate a Macintosh operating system with proficiency in word processing, relational databases such as Filemaker Pro or Access, presentation applications such as Powerpoint or Keynote, and Photoshop required.

Library instruction and/or outreach experience preferred.
Reading knowledge of French, German, and/or other foreign languages preferred. Knowledge of digital humanities and emerging technologies preferred.
Working knowledge of web content management and learning management systems preferred.
Working knowledge of image copyright preferred. Familiarity with digital image and color management technologies preferred.
