CONTENTdm Intern (OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc., Washington)
OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. is a nonprofit, membership, computer library service and research organization dedicated to the public purposes of furthering access to the world’s information and reducing information costs. Tens of thousands of libraries around the world use OCLC services to locate, acquire, catalog, lend and preserve library materials. We are currently seeking candidates for a CONTENTdm Intern position. The work location for the assignment will be our Seattle, Washington office. The OCLC Diversity and Inclusion Initiative offers internship opportunities designed to provide unique experiences for aspiring college students. The majority of the Intern openings are targeted for members of underrepresented groups as defined in a manner consistent with the EEO-1 race/ethnicity reporting classifications. OCLC will begin accepting applications for the internships on December 6, 2010. Deadline for the applications is February 28, 2011, with an anticipated start date no later than June 13, 2011. The OCLC Diversity and Inclusion Internship Program is open to candidates matriculating towards an academic degree (either undergraduate or graduate) at an accredited college or university. All applicants must provide proof of enrollment during the application process and before the internship starts. Length of assignment: 10-12 weeks Background: CONTENTdm 6 is a new public interface for accessing and discovering digital collections that will release Q2 FY2011. The UI is highly customizable and there is an API to query data. The new public interface is an extensible platform that lets CONTENTdm users write their own plug-ins, extensions, and custom web pages. Project: The project will create plug-ins or extensions using the CONTENTdm 6 platform. These add-ons will be made available to the CONTENTdm user community for use as-is or as examples of what can be done with the platform. The extensions will integrate popular open-source applications that the user community has expressed interest in using in conjunction with CONTENTdm. Potential tasks include: Write landing pages that display items using alternate presentation models such as map (such as Mappify), timeline (chronological), photo wall (such as Cool Iris). Create import plugins to import data from other sources, such as Zotero, Mendelay, DSpace. Create alternate designs or skins for the public interface, such as additional visual themes. Integrate alternate viewers (such as Zoomify). Create SWORD (Simple Web-service Offering Repository Deposit) plug-in. Specific skills: Experience working with open-source applications, web services or API’s. Knowledge of HTML, .css, XML and PHP. Strong problem-solving, analytical and technical troubleshooting skills. Ability to work well independently and document your work for use by others. Experience working with Windows and Linux a plus. Ability to learn technical applications quickly. Experience in library services, digital libraries, and/or content management a plus.
