Position Description:
The Librarian is responsible for the daily management, organization and patron service for the Museum’s library holdings. The Librarian will implement practices and policies to ensure the long-term care of these collections. As needed, this position will aid the Archivist with duties relating to archives and will help the Archivist with archive access requests. The position works in a team-oriented environment with Collections Staff including the Archivist, Research Curators, and other museum staff. The Librarian will provide services to the research, education, collections, and other museum departments, as well as research associates, visiting scholars, museum members and the general public.

Major Tasks and Responsibilities:
• Plans, organizes, and monitors day-to-day Library activities
• Provides direct and indirect patron assistance on a daily basis, including resource retrieval, telephone answering, emailed requests, and photocopying
• Supervises and sets goals for student workers and volunteers, and assists them as needed
• Supervises or performs all tasks related to reference, acquisition, and processing of 75,000 published volumes, separates, maps and other media
• Keeps statistics on patron usage and reshelving of library materials
• Catalogues Library holdings in a computerized database
• Reports to the Collections Manager on projects, activities, statistics, records, and challenges.
• Is responsible for the conservation and physical care of all materials in the library and actively monitors its security in conjunction with all staff, volunteers, and the Facilities Manager in a team-oriented environment.

Education and Experience Requirements:
• Formal library experience and/or masters degree from an ALA accredited Library/Information Science school preferred. Demonstrable knowledge of reference services and metadata standards (MARC, AACR2) desired along with a working knowledge of database management.

Abilities, Skills, and Knowledge:
• Extremely high attention to detail
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality in all professional matters.
• Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, with staff, trustees, vendors, and others to whom you represent the institution

Working Conditions:Generally work indoors, Monday through Friday, up to 7 hours per day. Position may require lifting of up to 50 pounds, bending and stooping, and sitting at a computer for long periods. Visual acuity is required for reading text and computer screens and printouts.

Must successfully pass a background check.
