Academic Assistant II

The Department of Art, Faculty of Fine Arts, at the University of Lethbridge seeks a Visual Resource Centre Coordinator to join a vibrant, collegial environment for a one-year project position commencing September 1, 2009, and subject to the approval of the Board of Governors.

The successful candidate will have excellent organizational and communication skills and will work with faculty, librarians and Information Technology specialists to develop, and manage the implementation of a digital image database.  MLS/MLIS or equivalent degree and a background in the visual arts (MA in Art History or MFA preferred) are required. One to two years of professional experience in key areas of responsibility will be considered an asset.  A university server with open source software and extensive storage capacity has been allocated.  This position may be renewable by mutual consent for an additional year subject to budgetary considerations.

The VRC Coordinator will balance the following tasks:
* assess the current slide library holdings and implement the transition of teaching resources from analogue to digital, together with the development of metadata schema, standards and their application;
* develop a relational database to store image metadata;
* identify and select commercially-available digital image collections to support curriculum;
* train assistants to create and format digital images and associated metadata from slides and other sources;
* train existing faculty in the access, retrieval and use of the database.

The Faculty of Fine Arts, housed in the Centre for the Arts with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, offers degree programs in Art, Drama, Music, and New Media within a liberal arts education context.
