Description:

The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens is seeking a well-organized and detailed-oriented Library Assistant to provide support to our Technical Services department.

Working under regular supervision and reporting to the Principal Rare Book Cataloger, performs adaptive cataloging of select rare library materials and related accessioning tasks and creates online finding aids.  Creates and maintains metadata for digital objects as needed.  Performs catalog support functions such as searching and inputting, as well as various clerical tasks.

Essential Functions:

Performs adaptive cataloging of select rare materials, based on appropriate available copy. Creates online finding aids for select book collections permanently or temporarily cataloged at the collection level. Creates and maintains metadata for select digital obkects as needed. Searches print and online sources to determine if the library already owns duplicates of titles to be ordered or cataloged or to verify bibliographic data. Creates or downloads temporary bibliographic records in the integrated library system, attaching iten and order records according to unit and department procedure. Has regular contact with selectors to resolve problems relating to accessioning. Performs catalog support functions such as searching print and online sources and inputting, correcting, and producing bibliographic records in an online database.

Other Functions:

May perform clerical tasks in support of cataloging as well as filing, photocopying, and other departmental activities. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Familiarity with institutional cataloging conventions for rare materials. This skill may be obtained through on-the-job training. Accurate, detail-oriented clerical skills which may be obtained through completion of an Associate of Arts or higher degree. Computer abilities, including data entry and word processing as well as database management software skills. Ability to maintain a monthly quota for temporary and fully-cataloged records as determined by the Principal Rare Book Cataloger. Must be tactful and courteous; and efficient in managing his or her time.

Experience:

One year clerical experience required. Library technical services experience preferred.
