Curator of Visual Resources
The Department of Art and Design at Grand Valley State University seeks a full-time Curator of
Visual Resources beginning January 5, 2008 or soon thereafter. The curator reports to the chair of
the department and manages the department’s visual resources collection. We seek a self-directed
individual with excellent communication skills to support teaching and learning activities in the
department and broader university.

The curator’s duties include the production and acquisition of images, cataloging the collection,
development of the visual resource database, and server administration. This position also entails
administration of the area budget, the training and supervision of student workers, as well as
oversight of reference works, equipment, and slides. The curator supports faculty and students’
use of visual technology campus-wide through leading workshops and related outreach activities.

Applicants for this position must have a thorough knowledge of cataloging procedures and
standards, for example VRACore, as well as be familiar with “fair use” laws in an academic setting.
They should also be proficient in working with Macintosh computers and software relevant for
image collections including, Adobe Photoshop, FileMaker Pro, Microsoft Office, Nikon SuperScan,
and I-View/Expression Media.

Preferred qualifications include a Master’s degree in Art History or Library/Information Science with
additional graduate level work in art history. Candidates should have a minimum of two years
experience in a visual resources library and have worked in a supervisory capacity. Applicants
interested in teaching may negotiate to instruct one course per semester, as needed by the
